Outlook pros, HELP!!!

i'm trying to create an email template to send out in response to specific incoming emails. i know how to create a rule for that. i created a template email, but when i go to create the rule and search for the template, it's not there. i double checked that it exists (thru "my computer"/looking thru my files), but it won't show up when i create the rule. the only inconsistency with the directions online is that, when i save the template, i can't choose "In the Save As dialog box, in the Save As Type list, click Outlook Template." There is no option for "Outlook Template", so I saved it as "Document Template". When I find the file, it's listed as a "Microsoft Word Template". I'm guessing that's the problem, but i don't know how to fix it.

any thoughts, gurus?

Im not sure why you don't have the save as option. You need to make sure it saves with an ost extention....Then move it through explorer to the directory it is looking for in the rule wizard....

hmmm...what if you save it, but it will not allow you to save it as .ost in any other directory? This is outlook 2003 just in case that makes a diff..

sounds like you have outlook set to use MS word as the default email message editor.

Try going into outlook, under the Actions Menu select New Mail Message Using, it will then pop out another menu and from that one Select "Rich Text" towards the bottom.

then create you template email in that and do file save-as and the outlook template option should show up in the list of available file-types in the drop down list

Hmm, if that last suggestion doesn't work, then may i ask what version you are using?

I have outlook 2003 and saving as a outlook template is available and i'm in HTML format, not rich text

Edit: I'm in HTML but MS word is NOT checked under the menu whiskers mentioned so that'll probably fix it.

This article confirms templates are not availabe with MS word as your editor.
