OS X Leopard install problems
#41
Anyone heard any news on hacking time machine so it can work on a windows server? Is that even possible? I have a macbook and I can't see carrying around an external drive everywhere I go and the macbook is the only mac I have.

Derrick, Leopard is the same price in Canada and the US, which means with our strong Dollar, it's cheaper to buy it in Canada, unless you can take advantage of ordering it though Amazon, where it's $20 cheaper @ $109US + shipping.
I'm not trusting a bit torrent download for my main operating system, there's just too many buggy pre-release builds floating around out there.

Install was cake.. I think I clicked a whole 10 times..
Is there a way to share the Ext HD with Time Machine ? Time machine seems to want the whole thing no matter what.. Selfish bastard..

Mail is a substantial upgrade in leopard. It's much faster. I've used it since Mac OS X Beta , so I've really seen this app mature over the years.

Turns out the failed install did something to my current OS. Said I would have to totally erase and install fresh. Before I did that I wanted to make sure I backed some things up. Well, after exiting to the start up disk and saying go back to 10.4.5 it just wouldnt boot up. It would try and shut off, try and shut off, etc etc.
So, the failed install basically bricked my laptop. I had to fw target disk the lappy to my imac to back up the needed essentials, and now I'm about to try and reload leopard. I'm really curious as to what happened, because the install to my imac was so flawless.

Install failed again. the computer flashes a folder with a ? when trying to boot without a disk. So, the OS has been completely corrupted and the computer is basicalling telling me there is no OS.
Leopard install failed again.
Gonna try and just erase the whole drive with a target disk and try again...
sigh

OK, erasing the drive using target disk worked, and now it appears to be installing. I never thought I would have ever had an issue, but wow, i guess we all run into bad luck. I just hope I am able to recover the few important pieces of data i think managed to get off the drive.
Thank you target disk...and hello time machine.

Damn, after hearing so many of you have issues, for now, I'm going to wait to get my MacBook Pro preinstalled with Leopard rather than worry about buying it and doing it myself.

meh... I wouldn't worry.
Just do a fresh install. You'll be fine.

the leopard disc that ships with computers and/or the disc that you guys got, is that simply an upgrade or a full version disc?
If it is a full version disc, I wouldn't mind giving it a go, even if I do the clean install.

Its the full version, and if you are running a previous version it automatically upgrades unless you tell it to perform a clean install.
Like Scrib said, I wouldnt worry about problems. I think what happened with my older G4 powerbook was just a crappy fluke. Its back up and running fine now, but man did it suck having to deal with it.
Give it a go I was just on ichat with my mother sharing videos and images with her. She loves the new OS.

I just moved my entire G4 rig into the basement. Two 500GB external FW drives plus all the internal disk makes it one tasty backup machine. Right now it's backing up all my photos and music. Then I backup this laptop and I'll place the order for the iMac this evening.
I will say that having screensharing built into the OS now makes controlling all the machines a snap. This is pretty fucking sweet.

Just called up the apple store again.
Placed my order on the phone with them, and they happily took my order to come pre-installed with leopard.
I ended up getting the 15" MacBook Pro 2.4Ghz instead of the 17" as I originally planned. After carrying around my 17" HP which I got last year I wanted something much smaller and lighter. The 17" MacBook was smaller and lighter, but after talking with a lot of people the 15" will do just fine.
They said they'll have it shipped to me by Thursday or Friday. I can't wait.

I'm on the edge right now. I'm going with the 24" iMac and amazon has them... But I want it Wednesday (took the day off), but it won't ship until Tuesday, so I'd have to pony up for overnight delivery.

I think my powerbook is going to have to take a trip to the genius bar. Something other then software has be up. I thought everything was fine, but when it asked to perform a software update and i did and allowed it to restart...BAM kernel panic...then another one. Finally got it boot up again, but I'm not doing anything with this machine until I have it checked out.
Annoying but whatever. I have been debating about sticking a bigger drive in this thing anyway, and at least I have the imac which is running perfectly.

I got the iMac replaced and on the new one instead of reinstalling Leopard on it I'm restoring from the backup I made of the iMac with the dead pixel. Currently the restore process is at about 60%, I hope it goes through as I've been reading about TM crashing often. I'm glad the Apple store replaced the iMac no questions asked. I do love that Apple does that, I've seen them do that with iPods, iPhones, etc. It's refreshing when a company takes care of it's customers so well. Most stores would never replace a product because of one dead pixel. I remember when I got my PSP and it had a few dead pixels I took it back to best buy and they were hestitant to replace it cause they were having so many with this issue. Actually it was replaced not cause of the screen but cause it couldn't connect to the internet at all. Anyways props to apple!!
Time Machine just finished the restore it took about 30 minutes for a basically stock iMac with very few personal files. It's restarting right now... and it worked. Now I'm gonna try the migration assistant again since the firewire on the powerbook seems to be hit or miss and currently it's hitting. I mean I should be able to migrate from panther to leopard right? I shouldn't have to have Tiger?

OMG it seems as if I've turned the corner!! The firewire is working and it found the powerbook and should be able to transfer all the files and programs. Speaking of which is anyone having compatibility problems with leopard? The only one I've seen so far is that Southwest's DING! program doesn't work.

FYI, if anyone is curious, I was told that if you bought a Mac after Oct. 1 from a qualifying reseller, you are eligible for an upgrade to Leopard for $10. My company purchased one from CDW on Oct. 4th so we ordered Leopard for it on Friday.
Also, kinda OT but does Mac OS not have activation like windows? In reading the thread, it leads me to believe people are using the same copy on two or more computers.

It's a worthwhile upgrade, IMHO.
It does have a few annoying bugs, though. But given Apple's recent track record, the .1 update is likely already in the oven and the masses should see it in a few weeks.

Of course AFTER I ordered my macbook pro, my buddy sends me this:
http://www.retrodata.co.uk/notice_ap...ate_drives.php
http://www.retrodata.co.uk/notice_ap...ate_drives.php
It has come to our attention from the sheer volume of this particular drive received for recovery that they have a critical manufacturing flaw.
The faulty drives are all Seagate 2.5" drives that are manufactured in China, with a Firmware revision of 7.01. They are also all SATA interface. No other drives seem (at this stage) to be affected.
We are receiving quantities of these drives for recovery, and nearly all display the same cause of failure. The read/write heads appear to fail mechanically, quickly causing deep scratches to the platter surface, and rendering the drives practically unrecoverable.
Should you have one of these drives in your system, we believe the problem is serious enough to warrant copying all your data off the drive and replacing it with an alternative drive, or a retail-version Seagate drive.
We at Retrodata believe that any sizeable manufacturer would by this stage be aware of such a problem and issue a product recall notice, or an offer to have the drive exchanged for a suitable alternative at their own expense.
