Their phone service sucks, but it's getting better. The main reason i have a nextel is because everyone i know has one, so its a cheap way to get in contact with them via bleep. Plus, i think i'm contractually tied to them for the next hundred years.

LoL.

I currently have T-Mobile with my unlocked Motorola MPX200 w/ data plan and don't get very good reception in my neighborhood/house, in the malls, and in Super Walmart. I'm considering Nextel as my backup/second carrier due to almost half the people I know and meet having Nextel.

Maybe when I upgrade to the MPX220 the reception will be better.

I've had nextel I believe for over 3 years now without any major problems. I signed my wife up last year for it as well.

Sure I've found a few dead spots around so cal, but all of the phone providers have that problem.

currently my wife and I both have the i836.

I've had it about a year here in CT and is probably as good as any other carrier here. I have the i760 and no complaints about it either.

They don't have a great selection of phones. The service is average at best.

I would have to disagree on this one.

I know they may not have all the cool features that some of the other phones on the market have.

But they have added quite a few phones with a lot of features since last July.

They were pretty much the last to add camera phone and music playing ringtones.

but their phones have greatly improved since last July.

I wish I could upgrade to the i930

Service sucks, phones are expensive and bulky, Sprint customer service sucks (they lose my bill in the mail at least twice a year and shut me off cause of it ) Their plans aren't cheap considering what you get. The PTT is pretty cool, but you find yourself not using it much. And battery life on those phones suck, especially if you use the PTT alot. I cannot wait until July so I can cancel.

SO as you can see, I hate Nextel with all of my being.

Good luck

Not all their newer phones are bulky at all. In fact, my i836 is pretty small.

just a random comparison with the first phone I found on verizon's website:

Verizon Motorola V276

Size: 3.6H x 1.8W x 0.9D inches

Nextel Motorola i836

Dimensions: 3.4” (H) x 1.9” (W) x .8” (D)
so as you can see, my phone is actually about the same if not a hair smaller.

Oh and I forgot to add, Nextel phones by far are the most rugged phones on the market.

So you may say that they are a more expensive, but they are built a lot better than other phones.

But i'm not gonna take it any further than this because it also depends on how much you use your phone, how well you take care of it, etc...

I hear ya. I still have my i830 because its so small. I had an i95 and that thing was huge. In my area, the service is horrible, but Im sure like every other service, it depends where you are.

My first phone with them was the i95c as well. It was a great phone, just thick as hell.

But you're right it depends on area and other factors like if you travel a lot or stick in one area.

I don't travel much, but it's nice knowing that I never pay roaming charges with nextel anywhere in the U.S.

i dont know why people complain about phone size. The nextel phones arent that big. My I860 is the perfect size and weight for me. I hate those small homo phones that everyone needs to spend half a G on. With my I860, i can thro the fucking thing at a wall and it wont break.

It's because they compare the phones from like 3 years ago when they were big and don't bother to see the phones that Nextel currently has on the market.

All of the little flip phones that Nextel has on the market are nearly the same size if not smaller than some of the phones offered for other service providers.

Mind you there are still some of the bulky phones around that Nextel still carries. BUt those are specifically made for drivers and others in construction or other industries that need something that's bulky and easy to hold and use.

I had nextel for 2 years. My plan was 39.99, but my bill always came to at least $65 just from all their fees and other garbage. I finally had enough when the service started to suck and I'd get busy signals, call drops, and wouldn't be able to reach people through PTT. I switched back to Verizon and I'm satisfied, and the bill for my 39.99 plan comes to 49.55 after taxes and fees.

The cell phone/service place I go through they sell Nextel and Verizon. the time before last when I upgraded my contract. I asked her was there any benefits going Nextel vs Verizon. She asked me what do I use the phone for.(like business,or personal). I said for emergencies or if i'm not at the house people still can contact me.
she said okay. how many friends or family do you have have Nextel. I said a few. she said what do the rest have?
I said "Verizon. except a couple has Cingular and one said he going to Verizon once his contract up."
she said "with Verizon "in network" calling so you can talk to them for 3 hours stright and it's free.
the 6 years I've had verizon I've only went over my monthly minutes maybe 3 or 4 times. which is nice because I remember in college my buddies would come to class pissed because their cell phone bills be 200-300 bucks and they were just talking with their buds.

Ditto. I have the i860 and a i730/760 ( cant remember all the damn numbers). I want to upgrade but rather buy car parts Any calls I usually drop are because of my concreate almost windowless basement or just being inthe Boonies/Boondocks

I have the i870 now, the phone is a piece of shit. Between the phone freezing up for no apparent reason, to the mini display on the front going out on me twice so far, it's really shit. The service, since the merger, is even deeper in the shitter. I have horrible service at home, even more horrible service at work, and on my drive to/from work on the belt parkway in brooklyn, my calls drop no less than 5 times in a span of 25 minutes. Funny thing is, when it's pouring outside, the calls don't drop at all. When it's nice and sunny, the calls drop every few minutes. Even when I have the BT piece on my ear and I'm not on the phone, I hear the chime telling me there's no service every couple of minutes too. I'm under contract until October but might cancel sooner because no matter how many times I've complained to them, they haven't done a mutha fukin damn thing about it. So much for being loyal for 6+ years. Piece of shit Nextel

In the last 3 years I have had an i1000, i90, i860, i605, and now a i870. The ealry phones had great reception.(i1000, i90) The i860 is a piece of shit, it dropped calls constantly and battery life sucked. After complaining so many times Nextel gave me the i605 which was much better but I rather a flip phone. So I bought the i870 which is great as long as you use it for everything but a phone. Its reception is a little better than the i860. But I travel between worcester county to the north shore daily and have crappy reception the entire ride.
Now I hear the i930 is much better because it can run off both nextel iden towers and t-mobil gsm towers. But i'm not gonna drop another $350 to find out.

BTW I hear they will also have a new phone by the end of the year that runs of both nextel and sprint cdma towers. But again to damn expensive to keep swaping out.

Well I also have the I870, I cant really complain bout the phone. It has put up wit some major abuse...and still everything functions fine. Never has it froze on me or any of the below mentioned issues.

I used to live in Louisiana and it worked fine unless you went far out of the city into unknown towns. Now that I'm in Dallas, the service is good, I cant really complain. I havent found a dead area yet and the calls havent dropped. Works fine in the apartment, at work and pretty much everywhere else.

Now if you drive a lot from state to state its not really a good service, because everytime I travel between Dallas and New Orleans, most of the trip my phone reads NO SERVICE!! And that I fukin hate....

Anyways its been a while since this was posted...so I wonder what he went for???

as far as I know the sprint and nextel networks havne't fully been connected.

as soon as they are, the newer phones [and hopefully the older ones] will hopefully be expanded to carry a broader range.

for example, where my parents live up in no cal, they get sprint service, but my nextel phone doesn't work there. I'm hoping that will change soon.

My phone still sucks.....I'm getting out of this POS provider soon and switching to something with better reception. I was considering Verizon, but was offered something from a mutual friend who does cingular, I may switch to them instead. My wife's phone is with Cingular anyway, so I'll join together with her and share a plan. I'll be upgading her phone, and getting a PDA phone for myself.
