Netgear Settlement

I just got an email about a Class Action Settlement for people that bought Netgear Wireless products during a certain time period.

Go to this site to learn more:

Wow you get to buy from Netgear's store at MSRP-15%. That's the lamest class action lawsuit payout ever!

Still, good info to have.

Ditto. The only people benefitting are the lawyers. The 15% discount off the MSRP is probably more than Netgear sells into distribution at and more than I'd pay at Newegg.

I've got 2 netgear routers, 1 hub and other netgear products and haven't had any problems either.

I've had quarrels with how they've setup their routers because they left out key features that for me as a programmer would be very very handy. And even for non programmers, simply for network admins would be great.

But other than that I've always been happy with netgears products.

I had a DS104 4-port ethernet hub that lasted nearly 8 years up to a few weeks ago. It was on 24/7 for almost a decade and always ran pretty hot to the touch. That's a good, solid piece of SOHO network hardware right there if you ask me.

The class action lawsuit alleged false advertising. According to the complaint, the advertised speed of 240 mbps is a peak speed that usually cannot be reached under normal, real-world conditions.

Do you mean the law suit, the settlement, or the advertising claims in question?

It's sort of a really lame settlement. The company is only out $700,000, has to insert a huge disclaimer in its ads, and give people 15% off of regular price (plus donate routers, etc. to a charity). Doesn't act like much of a deterrent.

True. The Netflix settlement at least sent me a check for 9 bucks.....This to me is a coupon to get more Netgear crap at 15 percent off...

Maybe they should sue EVERY wifi maker for claiming that their products work more than 25' away indoors.

Isn't it a well known fact that networking products never operate at their theoretical limits?
I've yet to see a 10mbps ethernet nic that does 10mbps, let alone 100mbps.

Not for noobs who aren't as familiar with the products and factors that affect performance--those are the people who advertising/consumer protection laws are intended to protect.
