Is my old computer fast enough to run Windows XP?

I got this really old computer that I wanna install Windows XP on but it might be too slow and I won't be able to find XP drivers for it. Here are the specs...

266 MHz Pentium II
128 MB RAM
4 Gig Hard Drive

Will XP be able to run on this system? Even if it does, I'm not sure if I'll be able to find the right drivers for it. If not I guess the next best thing is Windows 98SE.

Awww damn. I checkd the minimum specs for XP from Microsoft's website and it just fits it but I'll probably go with 98SE.

I'd laugh, but that's not polite.

It'll install and run, but it'll be painfully slow. Now if you double the RAM and turn off all the new graphical crap in XP, and don't install a lot of programs, it might be tolerable for simple stuff like web browsing and word processing.

Yeah just upgrade the memory....u got enought HD space....after installing it....right click on my computer-->Advance tab-->performace setting-->select "adjust for best performance"

that will be aight for web browsing, listen to music, word and proccessing. it be the same shit if u put 98SE.

It'd run better than Winblowz, that's for sure.

Interesting, considering Linux has MUCH less overhead than windows.

I think we've sufficiently hijacked this thread.

Depending on what kind of a laptop it was, you could have been running into hardware issues that slowed down the machine. Namely video support. If there isn't a native video driver, rendering and the such is crap. XP is pretty robust in the driver arena.

I've always found linux to perform better than windows, expecially in older hardware environment. I tend to stay away from really demanding Window Managers though...

Back on topic...yeah this computer will only be for web surfing and word processing and I will be able to get XP for free. If I install 98SE will it be faster or the same speed as XP? BTW I bought this system in '97 and it came with Windows 95...so upgrading to 98SE shouldn't be a problem.

I would recommend 98SE out of all the choices.

98SE is the most stable OS, other than XP IMHO.
