My Music/iPod/itunes Library Question
My Music/iPod/itunes Library Question
Hey, guys! As usual it's been awhile since I've been on but I have a question for you gurus....
I just got an 80gig iPod and I've already copied my entire library from iTunes to it. I rarely every used iTunes until now so all of my music was on Windows Media Player 11 (which I hate). Obviously I've imported my Media Player library into iTunes and now I find I like iTunes better. Anyway, my question is, can I delete all of my music from media player ("delete from library and my computer" option) and simply utilize iTunes' library? If I delete all the music in the "My Music" folder from media player will I lose it all from iTunes as well? Does iTunes have it's own library? If not I don't want to do that. I'm just trying to free up some space on my laptop, I don't see the need for 2 different librarys with duplicate tracks.
Thanks guys! I hope everyone is doing well!

When I started using ITunes I simply directed it to my music drive. It is in no way referencing media player on my PC. You don't actually have multiple copies of the music if thats what your asking. All the software is doing is listing the music available in the places you have directed it to.

when you right click a file in itunes, go to "show me in wondows explorer"....where does it take you? does it take you to the itunes folder in your my documents? Or does it link back to the location the files were origianlly when you were using windows media player (such as c:/mp3 or something)
If it links you to the itunes folder, then itunes has essentially made a duplicate copy of your music and put it in its folder. You should go to the options and disable "manage my music for me", then you should be able to delete the music in that random itunes folder, then delete the listings of the songs from itunes, and drag and drop the folder from your normal music locations into itunes.
If you have purchased music from itunes directly, you will have to fish out these files and save a backup before you delete anything (as these are not doubles and stored in the itunes music folder by default)

you should look to see if it is in my music / itunes/ ..... or just where you originally had it .
another thing you can do to see if you have duplicates is delete everything from you itunes library (not the comp), and drag the my music folder from explorer into itunes...and then check to see if tehre are double entries
