MIT Physicists Promise Wireless Power

http://hardware.slashdot.org/article...34225&from=rss
"The tangle of cables and plugs needed to recharge today's electronic gadgets could soon be a thing of the past. Researchers at MIT have outlined a relatively simple system that could deliver power wirelessly to devices such as laptop computers or MP3 players. In a nutshell, their solution entails installing special 'non-radiative' antennae with identical resonant frequencies on both the power transmitter and the receiving device. Any energy not diverted into a gadget or appliance is simply reabsorbed. The system currently under development is designed to operate at distances of 3 to 5 meters, but the researchers claim that it could be adapted to factory-scale applications, or miniaturized for use in the 'microscopic world.'"
Sounds pretty cool. The applications are endless if this could be pulled off.

The transmitter would still need to be plugged in, right? Wouldn't you need to be 3-5 meters from an outlet?

In it's initial form yes. You would need to be within 3-5 meters which is perfect for computers or for devices in the car, stuff like that.

If the heat from the laptop can mess up your nuts, imagine what this will do to them.

i will be impressed if they can develop high power applications using resonance... at least a few kilowatts to start...

Just put up a fence at the border to mexico, and fine companies that hire illegals.....and like magic the traffic goes away. Do you remember how there was no traffic on the freeways on that day without an illegal immigrant??? It was amazing!!!!

... done.

Just the other day I heard the most ignorant comment.

Some illegal immigrant condemned Arnold for not allowing ILLEGAL immigrants from obtaining Drivers Licenses in California, the state in which they ILLEGALLY entered.

we live in a corrupt and ignorant society.

That would be awesome. But what happens if the frequencies of the transmitter or receiver somehow get tweaked? Would some items overload?
