Next-generation operating system formerly was code named Longhorn.

NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Microsoft announced Friday that it will call its next-generation operating system "WindowsVista."
The much-anticipated operating system had formerly been code-named "Longhorn."
Microsoft has promised that the new system, which is scheduled to be released in late 2006, will have several improvements, including better security features, more comprehensive search capabilities and a friendlier user interface.
Licenses for operating systems and related software still account for the majority of the Redmond, Wash.-based software giant's sales and operating profits.

6 degrees of Windows...
then the vista thus far is crappy.
1) Longhorn has been changed to Vista.
2) Vista means 'view'.
3) It's still a long way off - and it was called Longhorn, so we wouldn't be out of line calling it 'Long View'.
4) 'Long View' is a song by the band Green Day.
5) Green Day released an album called 'Dookie'.
6) Dookie is a slang term for feces (i.e. crap).
Hey, you're right!

But you're gonna need a pretty decent vid card to utilize all the nice features

Complete and seamless integration of video and pics in slideshows
Very fast desktop search
It was little things, but very, very cool

I got my invite on Tuesday to test
NOBODY here has Beta 1 or Beta ANYTHING of Longhorn/Vista
Beta isnt until next month. You have an EARLY EARLY Alpha build of Longhorn, with the XP kernel intact. Basically you dont even HAVE Longhorn because only the most recent builds have some serious changes to the OS. The early stuff was just "Window Dressing" ('cuse the pun).

Sounds like Mac OS X Tiger.

Mac OS X owns. I'm a Windows developer but OSX is lightyears ahead of XP.Vista isn't going to be anything spectacular. It probably should be SP3 versus a "new" OS. What MS needs to do is completely rewrite Windows and get rid of all the legacy crap. In other words, they should follow Apple.

I dont think they should follow Apple though.
The basic interface that Windows has right now is excellent. It needs a few extras and improvements but XP has the right idea in my opinion.
They should start from scratch with a 64 bit kernel. NO legacy. Even Windows XP x64 has 32 bit emulation. (no 16 bit though!)
If I had my way it would be called...
Microsoft Windows Youcanfinallysavethefuckingresultsofyoursearchnow
At least I hope that's the case. I'm gonna go absolutely apeshit if it isn't!

No DLL hell in OSX either. Permissions are unix-based due to its FreeBSD core (I'm a big fan of Linux). Unix-core was a big selling point for me. There are tons of little things the Unix core has given Apple over windows.

And keep in mind, I'm referring to just the interface, not DLL hell.
By the way, DLL hell has been fixed in XP
