Major Outlook problem... plz help

So the other day I open Outlook -

starts downloading emails, gets stuck, Outlook freezes up, effects other programs.

can't open or delete any emails. every time I open outlook it gets stuck on the same email. If I try to delete an email it says -

the file C:\docs & settings\mg\local settings\application data\microsoft\outlook\outlook.pst could not be accessed. data error (cyclical redundancy check) incoming pop 3 error

I've had our email host check everything on their end and my account is operating just fine. I'm still getting email on my phone etc.

Do I need to delete Outlook completely and reload? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm running Office 2003 btw.

Thanks.

    1. On the Start menu, click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type drive:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\LocaleID\scanpst.exe

where LocaleID is the locale identifier (LCID) for your installation of Microsoft Office. For example, the LCID for English (United States) is 1033. For a list of LCIDs, see Microsoft Office Help.
    3. Click OK.
    4. In the Enter the name of the file you want to scan box, type the path and file name given in the error message above. Note You may not be able to use the Browse button to locate this file because it is located in a hidden folder.
    5. To change the options for logging errors during the scan, click Options. If you choose Replace log or Append to log, the log file is saved to the same directory as the .pst file.
    6. Click Start.
    7. When the file scan is completed, select the Make a backup of scanned file before repairing check box.
    8. Click Repair.
do a search for a *.pst
open the scanpst.exe utility from your run command then browse to the location of the pst where your search has found it and run the utility

Exactly what the link says

1. On the Start menu, click Run.

when I do this I get an error message that says -

drive:\program files\common files\system\mapi\localeID\scanpst.exe
The parameter is incorrect

try this

Click Start, Run, in the run type this "outlook.exe /resetfolders". Type that without the parenthesis and make sure that Outlook is closed

What was the outcome of the pst repair? It will take some time to complete.
Also how big is the pst in question? They start to get corrupt around 2gig. The pst fix is a crude tool (it just starts chopping data out to get it undersize) but it works.

if you're talking about this, it's still DLing. 23.8MB of 54.2 MB

better yet, just click browse and go through the folders, start at C:\

also you might have to go to my computer, tools->folder options->view: show hidden files + folders

the problem is that link is something I jotted down and it's not the exact wording.

I reopened Outlook to get the exact link. I clicked on the help pull down and a Microsoft Office bubble opened up saying it would repair any problems w/ my inbox. So I'm working with that, hopefully it works.

thanks

I've been out of town for a few days but here's where I'm at -

I changed the email settings on my home desktop machine to download all the emails without leaving a copy on the server. Then I opened Outlook on my laptop (the machine with the issues) by running 'outlook.exe /resetfolders' like wicked suggested. This cleared out all of the emails and I was able to complete a send/receive and delete all of my deleted items and junk mail box. I sent a test email and received it and I thought all was well.

This morning I opened Outlook and it DL'd fine and I was able to delete the crap like all was well. Then I just received an email that I tried to delete and when I did this same message popped up - C:\Documents and Settings\matt garner\Local
Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Outlook.pst

I carefully copied the file name into the Inbox Repair Tool and pressed start. It initialized and started to run. At 23% It popped up this message - An unexpected error prevented access to this file. Use ScanDisk to check this disk for errors, and then try using the Inbox Repair Tool again.

I searched for ScanDisk with no luck. It seems like I'm working through this. Anybody know what I should do now?

Thanks

to run scandisk open my computer right click on the c drive and choose properties, then click the tools tab click "check now" under the error checking option. It will tell you it can't do it cause the disk is in use and will offer to schedule a disk check the next time you restart, do that. Then restart and it should start automatically. It will take a while though to complete.
