MacBook Pro

I have this laptop, it`s a cool machine, aluminum body, backlit keyboard, nice screen. My question is if I can upgrade this computer or optimize it? Just need it for browsing the internet. Right now it works well when it wants to and lags at other times.

Here are some specs:

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro5,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number of Processors: 1
Total Number of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz

Put a SSD drive in it and it will be like brand new.

Good candidate for SSD

Unfortunately IIRC, that model's max RAM capacity is 4GB so you're stuck there. It's a decent machine though so will get a definite improvement with an SSD

You should also run some form of optimization software every once in awhile.

SSD will help a lot with boot up speed and opening apps. Besides that I don't think there anything physically you can do to it.

What about doubling the memory from 2x2gb to 2x4gb?

Can support up to 8 GB according to https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4493759?tstart=0 and https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memo...o/Upgrade/DDR3

Upgrade options for MacBook and MacBook Pro 'Unibody' Models

OWC tested to support Maximum Memory up to 8.0GB:

MacBook Pro 15" 2.66GHz (All)

Works with Model Identifiers: MacBook5,1; MacBookPro5,1; MacBookPro5,2; MacBookPro5,3; MacBookPro5,4; MacBookPro5,5; MacBookPro6,1; MacBookPro6,2 & MacBookPro7,1

And MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15" (Unibody) Specs (Late 2008/Early 2009*, MC026LL/A, MacBookPro5,1, A1286, 2255) @ EveryMac.com says it unofficially supports up to 6 GB but 3rd parties have been able to upgrade to 8 GB

Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15" (Unibody) Specs

Identifiers: Late 2008/Early 2009* - MC026LL/A - MacBookPro5,1 - A1286 - 2255

Quietly unveiled without a press release, the MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.66 15-Inch (Unibody/Early 2009) is officially the same as the MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.53 15-Inch (Unibody/Late 2008) that it replaced -- and like all other "Unibody" models, has a case milled from a single block of aluminum -- but replaced the 2.53 GHz processor with a 2.66 GHz one (unofficially it also supports an additional 2 GB of RAM).

Standard RAM: 4 GB
Maximum RAM: 8 GB*

By default, 4 GB of RAM is installed as two 2 GB modules, no slots free.

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM but third-parties have been able to upgrade the system to 8 GB of RAM using two 4 GB memory modules regardless of the installed operating system.

But if the OP just needs it "for browsing the internet," 4 GB is enough.
