Mac OS X Snow Leopard
#201
So I decided to upgrade my parents Macs to Snow Leopard a couple days ago and I've been having problems ever since. After upgrading, my Dad's iPhone wouldn't be recognized by his Mac when plugged in via USB though it worked on my Mac. So he was able to get it working by uninstalling iTunes and reinstalling it.
My mother has a much more complex problem and I might have to drop her back to Leopard. My mom has been a FileMaker user for a long time, she lives in that program. Anyways after upgrading to SL she's been complaining that she can't see some of her fields, they're there just invisible. I did some research and found this thread and tried the steps in there but couldn't get it working.

I think this problem is more complex than that. I'm gonna try and spend some more time with it tonight but I may have to downgrade her.

I got filemaker working! Before upgrading a deleted duplicate fonts in font book and then after upgrading SL had added duplicate fonts during install and that's what was causing the issue. So cleaning up duplicate fonts again brought her text back.

I've noticed that spotlight is kindof the suck in SL. I've seen this on multiple Macs sometimes the results don't show up (usually system preferences panes) or they show up in a different language usually swedish or german or something like that.
does this happen for anyone else?

by default if you search in a finder window it doesn't search just within that folder you're in, it searches everywhere. That's annoying, but you can set it to search within the folder like Windows 7 does by default.

^OH sweet! That Onyx app is nice! Pretty lame that OS X doesn't have builtin capability to rebuild the index.
Well my dad just told me that OS X isn't recognizing his iPhone again. So he wants to do a clean install of SL and then restore all his data from a TM backup. But I'm worried if I do that then OS X won't recognize his boot camp partition anymore and it therefore won't work with Fusion either (fusion uses his boot camp partition instead of a .vhd file).

Yes it will, that's not the problem. With Leopard we've had to do a reinstall a few times cause it crapped out on us (I thought you only had to do this with Windows) but if we did that then OS X wouldn't recognize the boot camp partition anymore. It would see that it's there but it just wouldn't work, also I learned that formatting and reinstalling windows in boot camp without running the boot camp setup assistant first will also break boot camp.

Well my dad's iPhone stopped working with SL again. It worked fine for years with Leopard. We just did a clean install and it's still not working. He's livid right now! I think we're gonna have to downgrade him to Leopard if we can't get this working. I'll spend some time with it tomorrow.
This is what pops up in the console when we connect his iPhone
Looks like some sort of iPhone driver issue.

I got it working. Like I thought it was a driver problem so I had to delete the com.applemobiledevice.kext file and applemobiledevice.pkg and I also completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes just to be safe. So he's got his benm.at tethering hack working on Snow Leopard.
He still can't get autofill in Safari working and he lost all his contacts (separate from address book) in his direct mail program so still a few issues to work out but this definitely hasn't been a smooth transition and for such little gain it makes you wonder if it was even worth it.

Welp, we're DOWNGRADING to leopard cause the iPhone stopped working again. It worked a few times and then died with the same errors even after doing a clean install and deleting the drivers it still won't work even though it works on the other Macs. My dad was with a client trying to show him his website and his Mac wouldn't recognize his phone which probably didn't make him look very good.

Yes, I spent last night updating my MBP, Miniserver and MB to 10.6.5. I also did a clean install of 10.6.3 on the iMac and updated it to 10.6.5 then restored all the data back via migrations assistant. I also installed Office 2011 on all 4 Macs and I joined the macs to my miniserver domain.

Not sure what's up with Airprint, but evidently by grabbing some of the previous build CUPS files and moving them where appropriate, it works. I have not gone and gotten the 4.2MG build of iOS to verify, but all the various blogs are saying it works.

Technet is the bomb! $199 for the first year and then $149 every year after that and i can get pretty much any software from MSFT except for developer stuff like Visual studio (that's what MSDN is for). I've got multiple versions of Win 7, server 2008 r2, exchange 2010, Office 2010, Office 2011 for mac and I'm getting the next version of WHS when it's available.

I was reading an article on AI about how Apple pulled 10.6.5 for Server and I was reading the comments and a few people were complaining about continuously losing their wifi signals after upgrading to 10.6.5 on the Consumer non-server OS X. My mother has been experiencing this too after I upgraded her iMac. I thought it might be something with the router until I read those comments but everything seemed to be working fine before the upgrade. I'm not having it on my MBP though.
