Looking for Plasma or LCD TV

So I am redoing the bed room and want to get a Plasma or LCD. I want something with great contrast. Not looking to spend more than 4k for the bedroom.

What do you recommend,

Any of you that have one ? Lemme know.

Don't want the Gateway POS.

LOL i make you sound more German than you are! Correction noted! Well man, sorry to hijack your thread just figured I'd say hello. Mohegan sun, do you prefer it over Foxwoods? I lost big at Foxwoods and I felt like I was in a mall with slot machines. Haven't 'done the sun' yet, still looking for encouraging feedback before I make the drive.

Panasonic makes a good 42" from my research. Also, NEC is great deal. If you're interested in high contrast ratios(good difference between lights & darks) the JVC model is at 4000:1...

All these are under $2900 if you shop right.

Check out dealtime.com, type in plasma...they give you all the deals, you pick the best price, etc.

You still get flat look with LCD but without expensive...warranty and prices. In plasmas if one cell breaks you have to replace whole thing...you can’t just fix one. Yes they are more durable now but why take a chance.

Don't plasmas "run" after 3-5 years of use, leaving streaking in the display and basically needing replacement?

I've been reading a bunch on these things & from what I've seen...they have a normal run time of 7>13 years per Consumer Reports, etc & like sites.

As far as one pixel going bad & needing to replace the whole set, that's just not true. Regular LCD TV's are more prone to dead pixels, gives you a dull spot(not really 100% visible unless you have a bunch). Contrast is better with Plasmas, better viewing angles, etc. LCD & Plasma are very similarly priced, but plasma still has a much smaller footprint.

I've been giving a new Plasma a ton of thought, so I've been researching my rear off trying to find the best buy. What's funny is, I've learned that only a handful of manufacturers make the plasma glass...like 3 or 4 actually. NEC, Panasonic & Fujitsu I think(maybe Hitachi too)...But everyone else charges more than just buying from these guys...(NEC makes glass for Sony...NEC=$2,900, Sony =$5,900... ).

There's a lot to read up on, but I'm working on it.

Circuit City has a Akai 42" plasma(without tuner) for $2,700 right now...but I hear the cooling fan is noisey...so I stayed away.

Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?

Really, you need to decide how much you want to spend. If $5000 for a plasma is such a stretch that you couldn't afford a new one in five years, with all due respect - you shouldn't be buying that kind of TV. They are expensive to fix, you might as well buy another instead. Projection TVs on the other hand, are not quite as bad to fix.

Personally, I like the Pioneer Elite plasmas - they look VERY nice - both in picture and apperance. The gloss black finish is awesome. Very pricey tho, expect to pay over $10K. I wouldn't worry about the plasma color shift too much, you shouldn't see any for at least five years. There are so many variable to that equation that it simply cannot be answered exactly (What the temperature and humidity where the display is located and how often does it change and by how much - how often is it on and how often is it turned on and off. What kind of material is played on the unit, etc). Our local trade center just replaced all of theirs after about three years. They stay on 24/7 in a constant temperature and humidity while playing a scrolling info program that pauses for advertisements occasionaly. They are Fujitsu screens.

I would def take a look at the LCD and DLP projection units as well. Look closely in the store, it should be fairly evident to you which you like better. In my opinion, from looking at the $3-5000 units, the LCDs have better still images, but the DLP looks waaay better with motion. It may look diff to you. You need to decide how much room you want to take up as well. These will be about 12" deep and will require some sort of stand. Plasmas can mount on the wall, and are about 4" deep. Be sure to check if the screen has an external tuner/av box or not.

Regarardless what you choose, be sure to spend time with the remote and features. I can't stand weird interfaces or funky remotes, that's one reason I love my Sony. Check the contrast ratio AND black levels. I can't stand looking at slightly gray black areas either. Of course make sure it has the inputs you need, etc.

What's your price range and can you afford another unit of the same price 5 years down the road? Gimme us some other info like how much space you have, thing to hook up, viewing habits, etc and we can make some specific model reccomendations.

as far as the 5-10k range goes, pioneer elite and fujitsu ten make about the best (longest lasting) units on the market. Also make sure it's an HDTV set and not an EDTV set, people seem to have been confused by this and buy a 3000 dollar plasma and can't get HDTV to broadcast, and they wonder why .

I am looking for the 3-4k range just for my bed room. My Home Theatre setup is my 65" Hitachi Ultravision XBR Series. I love it. Not gonna replace it for some time. When it goes time to replace I will prolly spend 10-15k on a 60" Plasma or LCD's if they are out then.

This is just to watch at night with HDTV Signal and maybe a DVD player for Porn. HEHE

I like to usually buy high end. I feel u get what u pay for, but for my bedroom 3-4k is fair I feel. For Space, it's not an issue, its going to be a new room built. Its the 2 1/2 old garage, since a new one will be built. The house is getting re-done. Not mine, parents. I am saving for a house.

For $3-4K I would not look into a Plasma there. Not enough bang for the buck, and you'll have to drop to a lower end unit to keep HDTV in that price range.

What size are you looking at? I'd check out the LCD/DLP projections. However, if you don't have a problem with space you might also want to consider a traditional tube projection unit. You can pick a really nice one up for a thousand less than the LCD/DLP counterpart.

Or you could do what I would do...put the Hitachi (nice units btw) in your bedroom and get a projector and screen for your home theater!

are there any lcds/plasmas that can do 760p (or 1080p but probably not) yet? Most plasmas look like ass compared to a high end crt based HDTV because they just cant match the resolution. the highest lcd/plasma resolution ive come accross is 1024x768 but thats not even 16x9 aspect ratio, so it cant natively display 760p

Hmm interesting option. I may have to think about that. I was looking at the Runco the other day at my local theatre shop. The guys I bought my Definitive Tech surround system from. I think I need to read up on the DLP not really sure what that is...

DLP is hot. Digital Light Processing is a chip usually about the size of a stamp, EXCELLENT picture quality. Here's the best place to read up on it - http://www.dlp.com/dlp_technology/dl...y_overview.asp Walks all over LCD projectors. If you can afford it, there is nothing like having a large screen like this for your home theater. You do need to have the proper viewing distance (you can't sit 10ft from a 100" screen) and light (room need to pretty much be dark. No uncovered windows, etc.
