It all depends on your interpretation of "up to date" or "current"

Thats not outdated at all... The only thing that may be outdated is your video card. i have a 9600 128 and it runs the games I play just fine. They are by no means on the best settings but they are not pixelated either. Works for me.

mine is about 4-5 years old.. my freshman year of college and it is around what you specs are. It really isn't that outdated.. maybe so, but mine at least runs perfect for what I need to do!

now my old computer that was from 2001-2002, that was old!

I put together my computer in 2003 I think. The P4 2.8 was $350 back then. The Asus was $200 I guess. I think this computer is pretty old by now.

The problem is:

I was running a GeForce4 Ti4200 ($200), and then upgraded it to a ATI 9800 Pro ($180), and then now upgraded (yet again) to a ATI X800XL ($120).

Updated the power supply from 300W and then to Antec 350W ($80) and now another Antec 420W ($50).

Updated from a Gravis Ultrasound ($200) (the Gravis is the best) to a Sound Blaster AWE32 ($200), and then used the on-board audio for a while and now a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ($60).

I have been upgrading my computer from 8080 to 80386 to 80486 to Pentium 2 and then Pentium 3 and now Pentium 4. I have a stack of cases and old power supply and a bunch of CGA, EGA, VGA, and VESA cards.

Come to think about my computer...
Technically, I am still using the computer I put together in the 80's. I just keep upgrading it for the last 20+ years every year.

I even had my first 1200bps modem. And I was upgrading it from 1200bps to 2400bps to USR 14.4k to Zoom 28.8k to yet another USR 56K modem.

<G>!!!

Bottom line is that I am sick of this Frankenstein or Lego. I want something new and nice. Something that is "one whole" instead of parts after parts.

Oh. One of my computers is using RAMBUS RDRAM. The guy keeps installing craps to this computer. Should I add more memory? RDRAM is expensive. or should I just kick his ass?

You seem adept at putting together rigs, so i hope you wouldn't run off and buy a dell

I am dreaming of a rig with an intel C2D Extreme, 2 8800GTXs, pc-1000 (1250mhz) ram, 2 10k rpm raptors in raid0, maybe some water cooling, and of course overclock the shit outta it

now you could buy this all put together, or you could build it--obviously you should build it

My Abit AI7 (also Socket 478) may be failing so I took a look at what other 478 boards are available since my overclocked 2.4 GHz P4, 1 GB of Patriot Extreme RAM, and Nvidia Ti4200 (bought used for $20) is more than sufficient for my needs and has been rock solid. But I was very surprised to find that good 478 boards (Abit, Asus, etc.) are very hard to find now, even on eBay, and are selling at a premium. I really don't want to have to spend $$$ on a new CPU, RAM, and video card. BTW, the first system I built "from scratch" was an IBM XT clone which ran at a 'turbo' speed of 6.77 MHz, had a 20 MB (vice 10 MB) hard drive, a state-of-the-art Princeton 640x480 16 color CGA monitor, and a Hayes 300 baud modem. Only cost me $2400 to build! Still, that was better than the 1.77 MHz TRS-80 with 16KB RAM, 64x16 character B/W monitor, and cassette tape storage I had at the time.
