Japan launches satellite to provide ludicrous internet speeds

Users will need to install an antenna to be able to receive a signal, but for those speeds, I'd be willing to trade in a pound of my very own flesh.

Kizuna is expected to go live in July following a setup process once it is in position, but a speed boost is not the only aim of the game. Having a satellite in space means natural disasters on Earth are not going to have any ramifications on the country's connectivity, which can be imperative in disaster zones. If all should go well, expect such an infrastructure to hit the mainstream. Does that mean everyone will have a 1.2Gbps connection? Will outages become a thing of the past? Does Simba eventually become a good leader? These are a few of the questions the Kizuna raises, but we shall wait for July to rollover before passing any judgment. Hey, if anyone can do it, it's the Japanese, right?
I have a problem with the statement that they'll get more reliable internet from a satellite. Aren't satellites less reliable? Can suffer outages caused be land based outages like fool cutting fiber optic cables in the ocean and if it's cloudy you can lose signal too.

Bandwidth hasn't been much of an issue for satellites but the ping times are brutal.

We have a few execs that are on a 5 mbps satellite connection at
their homes and cottages, but when they VPN into the office, it's slower than dial-up. I believe all these satellites are in geostationary orbit, which would mean each packet has a 70,000 km round trip, plus the distance for any terrestrial-based switching. Once the packets start flowing, it's pretty quick, but if you're trying to send and receive at the same time, you're in for a long wait.

In other words, satellites suck for doing work on the internet, but they work fine if you want to download porn.
