I want to see some real-world cell bills reported by people before I jump. Cingular is just as pricy as Verizon for data services. I know I'm spoiled by my cheap-ass grandfather prices on T-Mo, but I've been out of contract forever and isn't this as good of a reason as any to switch?

Still.. $29.99 for 1500 minutes / month + $19.99 unlimited blackberry is hard to beat for a personal line. I wonder if my fiance will take over my T-Mo account so we don't lose the deal

Well just to get a slightly comparable minute plan (1350 minutes) its gonna cost you $79.....then I've read the data will be $29 (don't know if thats right) so your looking at around $120 with taxes. Who knows if that includes texting or what else you need.

now about this 2 year contract....you can always just cancel it for $200 right? This will probably end up being 2 months of service. sucks, but if you find yourself in a jam, then it's always an out...

I want this phone but I also want a new laptop when leopard comes out, I think Ill be going w/ a laptop... my treo has been good to me and Ill have the tethering hack.

I hardly use the touchscreen on my Sprint Treo 700p, Im on AIM 24/7 and it sends me free notifications when I get IM's so I just go online and IM for as long as I want... hahaha. I pay 15 bucks for unlimited online usage, I get 50 texts a months and hardly go over... Im gonna get free unlimited online usage soon along w/ 500 texts so I can text more "freely"... We share 500 minutes on three lines, hardly went over in the past 5+ years that we have been with Sprint.

That's a great plan. I pay about $60 for myfaves and unlimited texts/mms. I've had Cingular before and it's about the same as T-mo which I currently have here in socal. I don't mind paying $500 for an iPhone but I will probably hold off until they get some bugs worked out and upon further review. Hopefully they'll have unlocked versions available since phones with carrier software limit the phones full capabilities (PSP/game emulator on iPhone or Skype? ) The texting problem is also of concern even though the optical glass touch screen is sick! Touch screen with qwerty keypad has always been 50/50. I had a Motorola E680 and NEC N908, both touch screen qwerty and they were a pain to text with. I hope Apple will have more psuedo button sensitivity than my previous touch screen phones. 1 more week fellas.

Looks really cool, but I've never been completely sold on touch screens. The feedback and accuracy never seem right to me. Also, the screens get all dirty.

That is mainly because you are used to the tactile feel of real buttons. Though some touchscreens just are not good or calibrated well. I think this phone will perform marvelously. My only interest is how the touch screen will handle the qwerty. I assume once the learning curve is over it will be great.

okay but seriously, i have a question for the at&t rep....do you think that if at some point after getting the iphone and the plan, you'll be able to deactivate your data plan (let's say you lose or break your phone)? I mean, data plans aren't really bound by contracts...just the voice plans are. As of now, you are never locked into a data plan (I think)....if this is the case, then the 2 year contract is much more bearable.

Why have this device without a data plan?

I think if you can't afford or don't need a data plan, why not get another phone.

Not bad, not bad, considering the amazing opportunity for AT&T to rip customers off. So with this plan, you are a whole lot better using AIM and email than text messages, no?

I noticed some selective editing:
in the headphone clip, they don't show you what you're s'posed to do with the device while listening to music (belt clip? sleeve? case?)

Also, when diung all that poking with your finger on a website, how do you actually follow a link?

There were a couple more that I forget.

That said, if I could get one less than $599 I might be willing to switch to AT&T. I wonder if the phones will still have the Cingular logo now that Cingular has once again become AT&T?

You can add extra texts to the plans.

1500 SMS for $10 or unlimited for $20.

The plans are really pretty good. This is because Apple wouldn't allow AT&T to subsidize the cost of the phone. I think this will attract plenty of new buyers.

And damn, the people on macrumors. Those are some of the biggest whiniest cry babies I have ever seen.

For these prices I'll get the iphone 2.0 when my Verizon is up in Janurary. I pay $54.99 for 900 minutes + $35 for data (company discount) + $10 for texts = $100 before taxes and insurance

So for less cost I can have the iphone + 1500 extra sms = $90 before taxes

email uses your data plan, so that's ok...but when i had cingular (now AT&T) for my blackberry, any kind of text messaging that can send SMS will take it out of your SMS count.

FYI - It appears that you can activate the iPhone youself from home via iTunes. All that's needed is an iTunes account. Not a big deal once you're up and running, but I gotta admit it's got a "pretty slick" factor to it.

My understanding is that these AT&T plans are iPhone-specific. Part of which is that the data feature is tied to your contract just like voice.

Yes to the both.

One of things people are crying about on macrumors is that data is seperate because they dont want data.... Then don't get the iPhone. There is no point in owning the phone without data.

There are a lot of people that are immersed in accessible WiFi on regular basis. For those people, the required data portion of the iPhone plans is more or less redundant.

True to a point. Applications like google maps for directions and some of the widgets are pointless without having data capability all the time. Now, sure not everyone needs that. I use it. I use google on my treo a lot. I have a have Navi and I still use it. Just to compare routes or if I'm in someone else vehicle. etc.
Everyone will always have different needs. But the rate plans are competitive enough that there should be any real reason to complain over them. The people pissing and moaning on macrumors would still be pissing and moaning if the phone was free and the plan was $5 a month. That was really my point.

Looks like capacity is 8 to 10GB based on what they show early in the sync process (7.27GB capacity).
