In the end, the music on my ipod is the same music that is on my computer.
as for itunes deleting all your songs on your ipod. plug in your ipod to your comp, select it from the device list. in the general tab there should be a check box for Manually Manage Music. check that. now it will only sync songs you want. so if your HDD library outgrows your iPod HDD you can pick and choose whicheever songs you're in the mood for.
that way you can add any new songs you "purchased" without itunes doing a full wipe of your ipod

I have a 4GB Nano, and 40 GB of music, so I make playlists by artist or album or sometimes genre, and then just sync the ones I want on to the Nano...

But seriously, I've shown it to quite a few people who were under the impression that you couldn't get a song from someone else's computer without losing your library.
you know i tried that on my iphone and the damn playlist wouldnt sync? im i doing something wrong?
I have about thirty playlists (some are only a single album) and I manually manage them by checking the box in the Sync tab next to the ones I want to have synched. Works every time!
oooooh!!! i get it now, cause i have a playlist, but when i right click and tell it to sync, nothing happens
i guess i have to turn it on.can you show me a pic of the summary tab? minus any person info, if you want.
True, but I could easily plug someone else's ipod into my computer and put all my songs on their ipod (without erasing what they already have). So really what is the difference between me loading your ipod up with songs from my computer and me loading your ipod up with songs from my ipod.

but any way they can stop you from trying to do so, they are gonna do and this is a prime example.

Some pretty great music in that movie! "One of these mornings" is an awesome tune!
Curse you Miz!
I just had to wipe my Nano. It's re-syncing right now...
The info is:
Software ver: 1.1.3
Format: Windows
_ Open Itunes when this iPod is attached
X Sync only checked songs
_ Manually manage music
_ Enable disk use

If you're not worried about playlists, there's an easy and free way to get everything from your iPod back into iTunes.
1) Connect iPod to PC so you can see it as an external HD (you may have to put iPod into Disk Mode first).
2) Set iTunes preferences so that, when it copies music to your iTunes Music folder, it renames files and folders by artist/album/track name.
3) Make sure you can view hidden files and folders in Windows (assuming you're on a PC).
4) In iTunes, Add Folder to Library and browse to your iPod's iPod_Control\Music folder. Make sure you select the option to add all sub-folders.
5) Wait a really long time for the import to finish.
If you need playlists, there's a shareware utility (I think I paid $20 or $30 to unlock it completely) called CopyTrans. I only used it because I have a ton of playlists, a lot of which are more complicated than just "all tracks by a single artist".

while we're on the topic of ipod, i have a problem.
my ipod's default volume is extremely low. that is any sort of output i have to turn the speakers way up. when i use the itrip in my car, i'll have to turn my car's volume almost to the max to hear anything. when i plug the ipod into my 5.1 speakers, it's the same deal, i'll have to turn the ipod all the way up so that it outputs any kind of noise, then turn the speakers almost up to max to hear anything.
my siblings' ipods are not like this, leaving their ipods' volumes at about the middle and plugging it into an auxillary output will get a quality sound and good volume.
any ideas?

In "settings" on the ipod there is a default max volume slider you can adjust (on the ipod) designed to prevent you from blowing out your eardrums. Check to see what it is set at.
Also, what kind of connection are you using in your car? Headphone or dock connection? If you are using the headphone connection, it will always be low in your car because you are using the ipod built in amp designed for earbuds, but if you use the dock connector to connect to your car, it bypasses this and uses your car stereo HU to do the amplification.

Also iDump doesnt work with my 2nd gen Touch, figured it wouldnt
Try turning volume limit ON and then maxing it out. Also, headphone jack should give MUCH lower power output than dock connector. If you have a 3.5mm to two channel cable, try plugging in this way to your home stereo receiver, and then do the same with a dock connector to two channel cable. Huge improvement in the sound level and quality using the dock connector.
3.5mm output is analog, dock connector output is digital.

I didn't know where else to post this question, and really didn't want to start a new thread... so
anyway, after following instructions (from Youtube), on how to transfer music from an iPod to a PC (Vista), I got everything there... but yet, won't let me play any songs unless the actual iPod is connected... I think this is defeating the purpose... What am I missing? I know there's gotta be something else...
anyone can help, I'd really appreciate it
