Intel Mini Pc

Intel's own mini PC

A front view of Intel's Mac Mini-like home PC, which was unveiled at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco on Wednesday. The square, metallic-colored concept device is immediately reminiscent of the desktop computer Apple Computer introduced earlier this year. A remote rests atop the box.

Intel Vice President Don MacDonald shows off the Sleek Concept Entertainment PC at the Intel Developer Forum.

Saw this earlier.

I can not imagine current x86 hardware fitting into that enclosure. No way. Even the article above mentions that.

But holy fuck is that enclosure small. It looks like the size of an IDE CD-R drive.

it could be laptop hardware fitted into that box so getting something that small is very easy and may be just a way for wintel to compete with apple and make sure that the Mac mini doesn't catch all of the market for mini computing movelty.

I think the intel side will have problems with heat and it will be based on the same centrino architecture used in laptops to prevent the heat from building up. I'd still take the Mac mini over this, even though I am an x86 baby since my beginning.

Sets on fire within five minutes of ownership, or turns on a fan so powerful and noisy that replacement parts can be found on e-bay under the heading "Electric Supercharger, adds 70 HP"

personally i don't think mini pc's are going to be too big in the general market. i am not one to upgrade too many components but with everything being integrated it's not likely going to happen. i don't really understand the benefit of it even if its so small. are people going to be traveling with it? if so why not just get a laptop. it will be less of a footprint on the desk but that's about it.

I have a 3lb Centrino laptop with a DVD-+RW built in. The only reason its as big as it is is the 10.6" screen. Without the screen and with some rearranging, it could easily be as small as a mini. I have no overheading problems.

If they're using heat sinks without fans then they're going to gear that thing way down.

it's only a plastic mock up, there's no internals in it.

After owning a mini for about a month now, I disagree. I do think that mini computers will be the next big thing. As far as upgrades, the majority of the population simply does not upgrade their PC.

My tower takes up a lot of floor space. My mini takes up none. It takes up a very small amount of desk space. Hell, it sits on my KVM. Everyone I have shown my mini too wants one (not necessarily an Apple, but they want a small PC like that).

My mini takes very little power to run. The average PC draws over a 100watts during normal operation. My mini draws about 26 watts. I read an article on this but I can't recall where.

On top of all of this it’s quite. It just sits there, no noisy fan (most of the time). I didn't think that was something I cared about, but now I do. I can't tell you how surprised I was the first time I told the mini to print to my laser printer and I realized that the laser printer had a fan. I never heard the laser printer’s fan before with my PC on.

Please don’t start arguments that the mac mini is underpowered. Yes it could be faster. Future generations of minis will fix that I’m sure. It’s just a matter of fixing the heat problem of faster CPUs.

i bet most of the people who make this statement compare hardware side by side. they don't take in cosideration that OSX and Windows run very different. One big difference would be the non existence of the registry in OSX. Things run a little smoother on Macs.

besides, if anyone starts hating, just ask them how much they like spyware, corrupted registry, etc., etc.
