Great specs all around but HTC will be locking the bootloader. Cyanogenmod is questionable at the moment for that phone. Probably won't matter for regular users.

Most manufacturers will be locking their bootloaders from here on out. No one really knows the reason why they're doing it but it could be related to the malware scare that happened recently or its most likely to prevent XDA from providing the updates without the manufacturers' consent to force people to get a new phone. Motorola was the first to lock the bootloader and consistently has done so. Unfortunately, no one has figured out a way to get rid of it. They have limited success in flashing "Custom" ROMs but they're not as custom as the phones with unlocked bootloaders.
Since the Thunderbolt, HTC has begun to do the same practice. Thunderbolt owners got lucky because an early ROM leak came without the locked bootloader that the retail units received. So in order to unlock the bootloader on the Thunderbolt, people have to flash backwards to that leaked ROM then their devices will be unlocked for good. Not sure how lucky people will get with future HTC phones in terms of the bootloaders.
Unrevoked, (the same guys who created the HTC Evo root and other HTC Devices) has created a list of what phones will have unlocked bootloaders:

Right now, the XDA people aren't sure how easy or difficult it will be to break the bootloaders and they won't find out until the devices are released. What they're encouraging people to do right now is to avoid purchasing them since money talks.
So far LG and Sony Ericsson has confirmed they'll allow you to unlock bootloaders at your choosing which make them ideal devices for custom ROMs and Cyanogen is thinking about getting the LG G2x. Samsung is supposedly going to keep the bootloader unlocked but they haven't confirmed it yet.
So for most people, the unlocked bootloader isn't a big deal because only a few percent care about custom ROMs. For those that want CyangenMod, MIUI or any of the cool XDA ROMs, avoid the phones with locked bootloaders.

My boy picked one up, checked it out yesterday. Touchscreen was more responsive and it was quicker switching screens. The processor is more powerful. The 3D video looks good but I had to look at the screen straight on or it gets blurry at only a few degrees off center. The 3D phone size dimensions are nearly identical to my Evo.

Evo 3D just got rooted. I'm sure the process will get easier in the next couple of days.

Seems to be a WIP. No custom recovery yet but that shouldn't be hard for them to make. Hopefully, that bootloader is next.

Unlocked bootloaders coming in August/September:
Source: http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-up...tloader-policy
We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!
