HP Computer keeps shutting down automatically

Ok so my HP desktop computer keeps shutting down automatically by it self. I will turn the power on it will show Windows XP and then shut off. Dont know what the problems is maybe there is a computer guru on azine trying to avoid taking it to geek squad, good thing I have 2 other computers

Plus this might not be in the right section I didnt see a sub forum for computers

I had one of these last week, and it turned out to be a virus that infects EXPLORER.EXE (the Windows desktop) and WINLOGON.EXE. Remove the hard drive and install it as a slave drive in another PC that you know is clean, then run your antivirus program of choice (making sure it's up to date first) against the slave drive.

Sounds like a hardware issue to me.... maybe a bad power supply or mobo?

My cousin had a similar problem... the pc would boot up and you'd see the Windows logo, but then it'd shut down and restart. I swapped out the power supply and all was good.

With one other person, it turned out to be a bad mobo.

Could be a corrupted driver too. Can you boot Windows into Safe Mode?

Power supply is most likely item of hardware to fail. Also happens to be a pretty cheep piece. Grab one (keep the receipt) and see if it fixes it. If not, return it.

Happened to my pc. It also toasted my motherboard twice before I realized what was wrong. Luckily newegg warrantied the replacement MB the power supply toasted.

Seems like an overheating issue to me. Crack open the case and see if all the fans are spinning when you turn it on. The ball bearing in your CPU fan may have gone bad and its shutting down. Or it could be power supply too. Recently I had a client having the same issues, the pc would only be on for a few minutes and then shutdown. It ended up being the APC battery backup that it was plugged into was messed up and would crap out under load. But in my experience it's usually the cpu or power supply overheating.

But then I talk out of my ass a lot sooooo........

Make sure you use enough conductive gel when you put the new power supply in. Can have a dramatic effect.

Have to go through process of elimination.

Used to happen to my old PC. Turns out it was a bad power switch...got a new one and it worked fine till I got rid of it. I'm sure I could've fixed it with duct tape...

I am having a similar issue on my Hp desktop. I keep getting sent to a blue screen, then the comp shuts down. I can boot up in safe mode. I also managed to run avast and found 3 viruses and got rid of them. Seems to be working fine right now. You tech guys think that the virus I found would do that? It was virus exe file type.

More than likely a corrupt driver/s since it starts the boot process before shutting down.

Yes. I've seen it happen with infected PCs

Even after hooking up the HDD to another PC, scanning and cleaning it, it still wouldn't boot. So fresh install of Windows was only solution. Too many corrupted files I guess....
