How to rip a dvd to your treo.
How to rip a dvd to your Treo.
I finally got around to messing with this today, and I can't believe I never did it before. Its not difficult, and the quality is fantastic. Here is a quick walkthrough of what you need and how to do it (I actually probably went into too much detail, its really easy). Many thanks to Srika, most of this info came from him. The programs are free.
First get the player, I used TCPMP.
http://tcpmp.corecodec.org/download
Next get Palm File Browser. This lets you easily move files from your pc to the pda.
http://mytreo.net/downloads/details-...m_File_Browser
Download the PRC file, and run hotsync to install it on your Treo.
Download the .zip, and install the pc side program.
The program looks like this.
The left is your pc, right is the Treo. 0 is the internal drive, 1 is your SD card. Navigating is a little awkward but you get used to it quickly. You must have the program running on the Treo when you connect to it from your pc.
Next rip the dvd.I normally use dvd decrypter + dvd shrink, but I think the program FairUse works better for the treo.

Throw in your dvd and start this. Name the project, choose destination folder, and pick your dvd drive.
Pick the movie from the list of files (the only big file)
Rip the dvd...(takes 15-20 min)
I didn't mess with these options, but you can if you want to.
Hit autodetect on the next screen and pick whatever it says...
Pick the size and options on the next screen. I used 200mb and it looks pretty good.
It will then convert the file and the audio. This is very slow, probably 40 min or so.
That will spit out the .avi, find it in File Browser...
and transfer it over to your Treo.

One thing I changed on the 3rd Fair Use screen above, was to uncheck the box for "Show only preferred resolutions" - otherwise you don't see the 320 width resolutions listed. You need to choose one of the 320 width resolutions because that's the native resolution of the 650 screen. If you leave it set at a width of 208, it will enlarge it in full-screen mode (which is worse than if it had to shrink it, btw). Since this requires more data, you might want to set rip size to 250mb... but if it still looks good at 200mb, I would keep that.
Also - depending on the aspect ratio of the original, you may have to be wary of the height value as well. If you rip the video and things look "too skinny" or "too fat" - you have aspect ratio issues and should re-rip with the correct height, as applicable.

just did this and am very impressed at the results. i ripped a 30 min. episode of thundercats from my DVD down to 100MB. total process took about 20 min. i ended up going to staples and buying a 1GB SD card for $59.94 http://www.staples.com/webapp/wcs/st...&cmArea=SEARCH
BTW if you have a card reader, you don't have to use the windows version of the file browser. i use filez for palm http://www.freewarepalm.com/utilities/filez.shtml (watch out for pop ups though)
wow, this new feature is great. i should go back to work now thx BEET & srika

btw I should mention that Siggy told us all about these options 8 months ago (DVD ripping, USB mass storage)... lol. But I was still a Treo n00b at that point and didn't feel the need to expand just yet. Actually the main problem was I didn't have a 1gb card. I then bought one about 2 months afterward but then made the mistake of letting a friend borrow it. 1 month turned into 2, 2 months turned into 6. . Finally got it back only just recently, and started really exploring the options.
