how to get internet to my laptop
how to get internet to my laptop
i'll make it simple as possible to understand. my mom got a new laptop, it has a wireless network card, we have a router in the house for our computers (it is not wireless tho)...what would be the best way to get an internet connection to the laptop? thanks.
They used to sell Wireless Access Points, that you could just add to the router, but with Wireless routers being so cheap, it's easier to just buy a wireless router. What kind of card do you have in the laptop (make? 802.11b?)

not really cheapest, what if he has, 5 other computers linked up wired, he would have to buy a card for each computer if they dont have a wireless card, you can hook up your new wireless router on top of your wired one

But Raheel, your point point will make sense when more than 4 ethernet ports are required; just using the old router as a switch (just disabling DHCP and avoiding the WAN port)

so to do this..i would do wall->cablemodem->normalrouter->wireless then just leave the 3 comps hooked up to normal router and wireless for the laptop and disable DHCP on old router?

I will follow wsklar reply. You dont wanna mess around with more than one device for now. Get a new wireless router, replace it with the old router you have, hook up the 3 computers to the networks ports and then connect the laptop via wireless.
Now, if you absolutely require to have more than 4 network ports, then the solution will be:
modem -> new wireles router -> old router (disabling DHCP and not using the WAN port on this one)
