How do I convert Hi8 video to Windows Media/AVI?
I have a few Hi8 tapes recorded from a regular Sony HandyCam.
What equipment do I need and how do I convert it to be seen on my computer in video clips? Expensive process? Is this even possible?

My bad. I just checked my Digital8 camcorder manual again and it says I can record on tapes labeled Hi8/Digital8, but can only playback Digital8 tapes. I just assumed I could play them back because all of the media I buy to record on has the Hi8 logo also.

Well, Hi-8 is analog video so you will need an analog capture device. I'd recommend getting a capture card. I currently have a Pinnacle Systems DC10+ MJPEG video capture card. It provides decent image quality. Another option is to get a capture card called the Osprey 200. I heard it is a very good capture card and I'm thinking of getting one now that I have just bought a Hi-8 Canon camcorder myself. Check out www.dvdrhelp.com/capture for motr info on capturing analog video to your computer. It will take some reading to figure it all out. Another option is to go to a chain computer superstore and buy a low-end easy to use analog capturing package. They should be by the video cards. Since you use Hi-8, try and get a capture device that has s-video input.
I found this in another forum, hope it helps. I know that best buy and comp usa sell these type of converters. There is one that I can see in my head, but I cant think of the name of it.
Basically, you take analog audio and video, the red, white, and yellow jacks, out of your camcorder to this capture card!!!
GOOD LUCK, and let me know if this helped!!
