Home network help needed
I know there's several IT gurus around here and I need some help b/c I can't find any via google.
I have a Linksys router which desktop is hardwired to and laptop is wireless to. Both connect to the internet with no problems. However, I can't see either computer in Network Places. I have run the network connection wizard, changed computer name and workgroup, etc. I did a ping from the desktop to the ip address on the laptop and got a response. However, when I pinged the desktop from laptop, no response.
I don't believe it's the router since I can access my Tivo through the same wireless setup.
Cliffs:
Home network connecting desktop and laptop
Both have internet
Not seeing other computer in Network Places
Advice?

Are they all on the same workgroup? Are any folders shared on the desktop computer?
Open windows explorer on the laptop and type into the location bar //DESKTOP/ (where DESKTOP is the actual name of the desktop computer - Right click My Computer>Properties>Computer Name)

I looked under My Network Places, Entire Network, Microsoft Windows Network, WarEagle (Name of my workgroup) and only see the laptop listed.
If you can't ping by IP address, check your firewall settings. Make sure File and Printer Sharing is in the Exclusions list to enable NETBIOS browsing requests to be passed through.
Check in your Local network Connection properties and make sure "Client For Microsoft Networks is listed and enabled. This will enable NETBIOS for network browsing.
Edit: It's actually \\, not //, for UNC paths.

Sometimes all of the computers in my home network show up in My Network Places, sometimes they don't, and sometimes even though they are showing up it gives me an insufficient privileges error when I try to open them. I've never understood why they work sometimes and not other times.
file and printer sharing should be on. reset your router to factory specs. alot of times this is the issue.
if all else fails
boot in safe mode with command prompt
type in del C:/windows
hit enter
buy a mac

Make sure you are connecting to the correct wireless network. You may be connecting to a neighbors network.
If you are using the default wireless settings on your router, change them. Make sure you enable encryption.
Make sure your laptop is not set to automatically connect to untrusted networks, and remove any networks from the list that you know are not yours.
