Help on Notebook suggestion

Anyone has any recommandation on the CURRENT laptop models ? I am planing to purchase soon, but have no clue at all. All i have found out so far is that i probabaly want to go with a Centrino.

What i am looking for is basically thin, long battery life, and 512ram, preferablly with DVD +/- rw and a reliable.

I have seen the Gateway 200X in local store here, its rather cheap but i have read some review regarding its crappy display and sound. Although thats understandable since its so slim and cheap.

So far my choies are
gateway 200X
Sony GRT250C (non centrino)

is centrino really a great technology? long battery life and light weight ?

any comment and suggestion would be appreciated.

Indeed. I have a Compaq, but If I had to do over, I would get a dell.

First off, centrino is not a processor. It is "is the name of Intel's proprietary three-part, wireless computing solution for notebooks".

corey, thanx for the clarification. Yah i sort of know its a combination of 3. Thanx for the article.

Sooo.... centrino is basically Pentium M processor ? Why is that all centrino models has higher battery life ? becaues of the 3 combo working more efficiently ? or ?

If i dont go with centrino, Pentium M series are the best choice ?

well, lets get this straight. Centrino is just the combination of intels pentium m chip and their integrated wireless. But the bottom line is, you have 4 chip options for a laptop, being:

Pentium 4
Pentium 4-M
Celeron
Pentium M

Of the four, the Pentium M is the only processor designed from the ground up for mobile computing. However, that doesnt mean it will necessarily be the best option for you. The chip is considerably more expensive than the the other three options. If your computer is going to be at a desk the whole day (i.e. desktop replacement), you wont really need a pentium M. But uh, dont get the Celeron, its slow.
