Help.... Laptop w/ vista trouble

So Last night I turned off my laptop fine.. but this morning when I went to school I started it up and saw it took longer than usual to boot up... after I type in my password , I noticed it say: preparing your desktop...

I thought how strange... so then the welcome screen shows up, and I see this text pop up from the bottom right sidebar with power options, etc....
it says:
Your user profile was not loaded correctly! You have been logged on with a temoprary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off. Please see the event log for details or contact your adminstrator.

First thing I noticed was my background was gone, and my pictures and file folder is gone.. and then I check my documents... and all my documents are missing... wtf is going on?!?!

I tried system restore to yesterday, but it didn't work... so in short, all my schoolwork and pictures are gone... any way to resolve this problem? Is there a way I can somehow dig up my pictures and word documents?

I've tried:
logging off, and re logging in
restarting the computer a few times
starting up in safe mode

any other ideas?

Yeah I think you're right Phillip... i rechecked how much disc space I have left and it is the same as it was yesterday.

I think Windows XP pro sp3 can help you out there.

Start -> type regedit

You'll see the folder tree on the left, scroll thru it, or use the search in regedit to find your key...

BACK UP regedit prior to saving any edits.

In regedit, click File, then Export.. type a name you want, hit Save, you're done.

You should be able to log in under (secret) Administrator when booting to Safe Mode.

I THINK I found my two problems:

Ensure the RefCount value is 0
Ensure the State value is 0

my refcount is 0x00000001 (1)
and my State is 0x000080000 (32768)

Do I just do Modify, or do I click on Modify Binary Data?

Lippstuh, Microshaft did provide proper info, they forgot to realize that you will be loaded into a default user profile, where you can't change shit. So the other link, will show him how to log in properly to make the change he needs to.

Double click, type in value, hit enter...

Go for it, you have the back up anyways.. you have nothing to lose.

Roger that! Did it... so do I have to export this again, or do I just restart my computer?

^ Just restart... What you've exported is your original back up, do not touch it, just in case you've just deleted another profile

yeahh, only the one that didn't work. It was a "bak" file, so left it alone, changed the 2 values to 0, and no workyy. Should i remove the .bak?

Under the ProfileList subkey, delete the subkey that is named SID.bak.

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList)

^ what is something?

Revert to

my refcount is 0x00000001 (1)
and my State is 0x000080000 (32768)

Restore the registry from the back up, and now only delete the SID.BAK file, and Log Off and Log On, do not reboot.

Every time I put the State to 0 and restart, it goes back to 0x00008000 (32768)

Do I need to change the temp one along with this?

there's a c:\users\eric (which is the one i am editing)
and a c:\users\TEMP.eric-PC

Eric, you are asking me what your user name is?

Change it for all expect Default.. And again, change the value, but do not reboot, just log off and on...

Dude, if you have other means of chatting AIM/Google/ etc.. it will be easier than posting here every sec...

What exactly is happening are you getting the error? Or no error, but nothing is coming back as it was before?

I just think someone delete the account files...and if that's the case the short cuts are gone.

Now if you see all of your documents from before, then everything is ok, just create a new user, and log in under it. Since nothing was deleted, you still have access to it. You will only lose your preferences and short cuts.. Not a big deal.
