hard drive question

Sup people... my hard drive is almost getting out of space, yea a temporary remedy would be to clean up to get some space back. But i am thinkin of buying a hard drive with more space...

sooo, how do i transfer everything from my current drive to the new one... like i mean taking the snapshot or image of my current harddrive and placing it on the new one.... do i need a software for this... ????

I mean i can install and have the new hard drive and make it master or slave, but i dun wana do that...

Well, when I bought a Western Digital drive to replace my OEM master drive, it came with software that transferred data from one drive to the other.

so all you have to do is install the new drive into ur comp and then instal the software it comes with to transfer everything you have on your old one into the new drive?

Take out the old drive and install windows on the new one.

The best way to move FILES is to put back in the old harddrive, set the jumpers on it as slave, load up the computer, and then you should be able to access it. Drag and drop the files you'd like in there. I'd suggest making a folder or something. DO NOT move programs/program files. They require registry entries and it will mess the computer up if you move them. I suggest saving your cookies/favorites too, which can be found in C:\Documents and Settings\[Name] where Name is your account name. The drive letter C: will probably be different too, perhaps D:. Whatever the old drive is. Anyway, there should be two folders, one that looks like a star called favorites and one simply called cookies. There is a non cookie file in the cookie folder you need to delete because it will bitch at you when you try to copy the cookies to your new windows install (do it the same way).

Programs will have to be reinstalled. You could also use a program like Norton Ghost to make a HDD image but I don't particularly recommend it.

I used BounceBack from Maxtor. I did not like it. It screwed up a new harddrive of mine.

Wow. You should've thought about getting it last Friday. I bought a 160GB Western Digital hard drive from Best Buy for $30 after mail-in rebates that morning. Heh...they were out of stock by 6:30AM. I installed the drive as my second drive so I don't have to worry about transferring files from one hard drive to another. Good luck!!

I wud of gotten the western digital, but my friend had some Maxtor left over from last year's black Friday, so he promised to hook me up for $30 bucks. And i think Maxtor is a better quality aswell ?

Ghost is your friend. Get Symantec Ghost, install it, and then make a boot disk. Install your new drive as slave and boot the computer with the ghost boot disk.

When ghost comes up just do a disk to disk copy. When the computer reboots, turn it off. remove the old drive and set the new drive to master. Done and done. should take you about an hour. good luck

Like I said don't use Ghost. I have had many bad experiences with it. It seems to not like to copy important boot files like NTLDR and others, and generally just causes a headache.

The best hard drives are made by Hitachi Global Storage Technologies (a merger of IBM and Hitachi's hard drive divisions). When you need to store your data go with the most reliable!

I'm actually about to get a storage SATA drive to go along with my 74GB 10k RPM Raptor (SATA of course). Someone is selling me a WD 160GB SE Caviar SATA drive for 65 bucks.

OKay installed the new drive, the software that came along with it took care of everything, my jumpers are set as cable select (CS). So the pc takes the drive attached to black cable as master, and grey as slave... Thanks for ur help everyone...

But this maxtor is not more silent than the Maxtor that came along with my pc... although thats really not an issue, but i can tell when the hard drive has activity now.

No Offense GaleForce, but if your 17m how much experience do you really have?
I have been using Ghost longer than you been in high school.

As long as you get a recent copy of Ghost, it will have 0 problems with NTLDR and boot files and any of that.

As for the OP, You will wanna do the following:
Hook up the new Drive as CS if your current Drive is CS. If not then you need to work out the whole master/slave jumper issue.
Boot from the Boot CD or Boot Floppy of either Ghost or as mentioned previously, the Drive tools from the new Drive's vendor.
Do the copy from the current smaller drive to the new bigger one.
When the copy is done, Shut off the machine, remove the original smaller drive and set it aside.
If your using CS, then put the larger drive where the smaller used to be on the cable. This will make it master. If not, then use the Jumpers to change it.
Then turn it back on and boot it back up. If everything went well, it should boot just fine.

Before re-attaching your old drive and reformatting it, you should probably run a full Scandisk/Chkdsk on the new one. (Right click Drive, properties, Tools Tab, Check Now, turn on Both boxes, and click OK. Click Yes to warning screen, click OK again, and then reboot.
On next boot it will run the chkdsk.

PS: As for being silent, Maxtor should have a boot util that allows you to change it back to silent mode. You will get slightly less performance in this mode, but it should be as silent as your old drive.

Ghost is a GREAT tool when you know hw to use it. Most people with little experience with it run into problems like you mentioned. Ghost did its job but it is up to you to change the boot.ini file on the drive either before ghosting to a new drive (esepcially if its scsi to ide or vice versa).
