Got a new laptop
Got a new laptop
to make a long story short, because the roughly 3 year old laptop i had previously has been sent for service numerous times through Best Buy. they finally agreed to give me a brand new one at no extra cost. i ended up picking a Toshiba Satellite with the Centrino processor (1.6 Ghz) and 60 gigs of harddrive space and 496 mb of RAM, DVD burner built in and wireless internet connection built in. this thing is siick!! i'm in love

(The 1.6GHz Centrino's roughly equivalent to the 2.8GHz in my Satellite Pro [P25-S607]. But I've got 90 minutes of battery, and you have about 300+.)
Now all you need to do is d/l the DeLorme mapping software from a.b.warez, and you'll be up the price of one Navi unit.
The 1.6 Centrino processor is equal to the Pentium 4 2.4Ghz. The Centrino is designed around mobility, making the design of laptops lighter, longer battery life and onboard wireless LAN. You could probably go into your BIOS and change some of the video settings so you get the full 512 worth of ram. Nice laptop though. I saw an add in a Dell magazine yesterday advertising their 8600 with 1.5 Ghz Centrino processor, 60Gig HDD, 512 mB Ram, CD burner/DVD Drive and 15.4 inch wide view screen for $1299.

I have a Toshiba Satellite notebook I bought in '96 that just won't die and is still in use - by my 88 yr old granny!! Rather incredible machine, I've used it with Win95/98, WinNT, OS/2, Linux, FreeBSD. Ran everything I threw at it flawlessly. My last couple notebooks have been Apples, but if I were to buy another PC notebook, I'd look to Toshiba first. Excellent hardware.
Toshiba make a great laptop. If I had the money I would get one too. For about $900 you can get the P4 2.66 Ghz, 256-512 Mb RAM, 40-60 Gb HD, DVD/CD-RW combo, 15" display, with the integrate wireless nic. Compare that to a few years ago when you were paying a couple thousand for an equivalent of that.
Yes the Centrino is equivalent to a faster processor, just the AMD Athlons. They run a slower clock speed but I have had many people tell me that they kick a P4's arse anyday. Personally I haven't tried one but wouldn't mind it when I get the money.

I've got a Dell now, had a Compaq before it. The build quality of the Compaq was MUCH better than the Dell (The Dell seems cheap and flimsy). Now I am not sure if thats just because standards have gone down now due to cheaper outsourcing of labour /manufactoring ... or if Dell just builds cheaper hardware.
IBM Thinkpads have great reliability and support. I've been in the IT industry for a long time, while no specific brand of laptop can be 100% reliable, IBM thinkpads are the best workhorses. I have a Thinkpad R40, and if it dies, I'll just ask my company to buy me another

I am jealous ... they don't allocate many of those to internal folks ... but I have a later generation T30 which is pretty nice
At my company we have a mix of IBM, Dell & Toshiba laptops. The Toshibas are older ones, from before we started a "Dell-only" buying policy. The IBM's are used be people who have enough clout to ignore the Dell-only policy and buy whatever they want for their own use.
The only complaint I've ever heard about them is that they are expensive to upgrade, but they are definitely good machines. I would never buy a Dell notebook with my own money. They don't seem nearly as reliable as the IBMs & Toshibas. The corp practice is to buy batches of refurbs from Dell to have spares on hand for backup and to have a fleet of loaners available to people who only occasionally need a notebook. Like I said, those who have a choice get machines that don't break down.

I spilled coffee all over my R40 and out goes the LCD. IBM support discovered the liquid so
warranty does not cover. They want $800 for the repair , I said you gotta be kidding send it back to me.
I may have to get another one if I can't find a cheaper repair.
You think you can do the employee buy for me ?
i've had a Dell that died on me and a HP, so i figured I'd give Toshiba a shot this time, plus this laptop is hella light (like 6.8 lbs i think) and it can last on batteries for like 4 hours.
