Toshiba Chromebook Officially Unveiled
http://www.omgchrome.com/toshiba-chr...ally-unveiled/
After a bit of a premature start last month, Toshiba has officially unveiled their first Chromebook.
Toshiba’s new Chromebook includes a 13.3-inch screen at a common 1366×768 resolution. Like other Chromebooks, the Toshiba device is powered by a Haswell Intel Celeron 2955U processor clocking in at 1.4GHz.
Specs in Summary
13.3-inch screen (1366×768)
Intel Celeron 2955U @ 1.4GHz
Intel HD Graphics
2 GB RAM
16 GB SSD
2x USB 3.0
SD Card Reader
HDMI Out
The Chromebook weights 3.3 pounds and Toshiba are expecting up to 9 hours of battery life out of their first Chromebook. The larger screen size will appeal to some, but the run-of-the-mill 2GB of RAM and 16GB SSD make Toshiba’s first effort a rather middling affair – replete with grey plastic masquerading as aluminium. On the other hand, Samsung may have much bigger plans for their ARM Chromebook on the horizon.
The Toshiba Chromebook will retail for $279 in the US and will be available starting February 16. That puts the device at the same price point as HP’s somewhat troublesome Chromebook 11 and $20 cheaper than one of our favourites of 2013, the HP Chromebook 14.

As bad as windows 8 seems to be, I just don't get it. You can get better specs for a Windows 8 PC for the same price (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/promo/la...rting-at-27999) and run everything the Chromebook runs, plus, you know...everything else if you want.
Maybe, and I mean maybe, its geared for the elderly who can't figure out how to use a computer or for people like my inlaws who seem to get computer viruses hourly.

No Windows laptop for under $300 will boot in 8 seconds.
My chromebook has an SSD, no spinning disk to crash or waste power on.
No fan to waste power on (although I think Intel based Chromebooks have a fan)
It's very light.
Don't think a $300 Windows laptop will run on battery for 6 hours.
I don't have to really manage it. Meaning, I don't have to waste time every month making sure Windows updates are installed, AV up to date, disk defragged, clear space, etc.
Updates for chromebook install in seconds, not minutes.
No viruses. My kids were great at loading viruses on my PCs until I introduced them to mac. They can't screwup my Chromebook unless they smash it.
I don't have data on it. If I lose/break it, no big deal. I can login to another chromebook and go about my day.
It's a not a complete desktop replacement, but either are tablets. I don't care that it doesn't run MS Office. Google docs is plenty good for what I need. The thing that annoys me the most is that it doesn't run Quicken. So I have to go "upstairs" to do that. Or I can use logmein to connect to my mac. (not all that great though, the chromebook is a little slow for it)

Miz, get a super cheap refurb and load Ubuntu on it and be done. Seriously.
Runs great on a older hardware, so if you have an old netbook lying around, etc. you can slap it on that and then slap it, er...

Chromebook won't be happy with that unless maybe you get one with 4GB and an Intel processor. The ARM ones aren't any faster than a tablet.
I like Stogies idea of putting Linux on something.

Not for me, but neat. I like that it has an HDMI input.
