If your intention is to make a backup copy of your DVD collection then use these:

DVDDecrypter to copy a DVD to your hard drive.

DVDShrink to condense the DVD info (if you're using 4.7GB DVDR's)

DVDShrink to turn it into a .IFO file

DVDDecrypter to burn it back to your DVDR.

For everything else, I use Nero 6 Ultra.

DVDShrink is one of the best (and FREE) programs out there. I rip with that and burn with Nero. Never had a problem till Netflix got a DVDR back ... that was no fun ... they won't let me play anymore

of course i only make backup copies of my own movies .. .not sure how they got one of mine

I realize all the above is freeware with the exception of Nero 6 Ultra. If i use DVD Decrypter, Shrink, will i be able to watch the DVD R movie on my xbox or dvd player problem free ?

I have burned @ 200 DVD's both -R and +R and never had a problem, neither any of my friends that borrowed these DVDs. Also I have yet to see a DVD that DVD Decrypter cannot unlock or properly record. I use NEC ND 3500 and my DVD Shrink is set to use DVD Decrypter as burning soft, istead of Nero. I use Nero for CDRs'.

does anyone know whether these DVD copying programs allow you to rip individual scenes from DVDs? (and not just the entire movie in one block or file?)

Also, once these scenes are ripped, can you forward through them while watching on your computer?

I have a lot of sports and other variety/non-movie DVDs, so I was wondering if that is possible.

I just got a DVD burner a few weeks ago also. This month's Maximum PC has a good article on creating professional menus with Nero Ultra for your own videos. BTW, what's the difference between -R & +R discs?

OK. I can't be this stupid. All I want to do is rip scenes from a DVD to my hard drive and watch them on the computer. I don't want to burn anything.

I searched and read almost every thread here. I downloaded DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter. I'm trying to read the guides online. But they all seem to give advice on how to make copies of DVDs. I don't understand what these IFO or VOB etc.. files are.

I just simply want to rip scenes and watch them (preferably to be able to fast forward through them also.) This is probably incredibly simple, but someone please get me going in the right direction.

i think you just create an .iso image on the hard drive, and then open up that file with your dvd player on the pc.

this may not be the easiest or right way but (ive never ripped just parts) try converting the movie to a .avi or .mpeg format, then use a editing program (window has a free one) to edit the file. like i said ive never done it, but this is what i would try first.

This is what you need to do....copy the files then convert them into an AVI

My cousin said you can make the dvd into an image and watch it as if it were in a drive but I have never tried or seen that work.

To breakdown -R and +R media..

DVD-R: Can be played back on more older media/DVD players
DVD+R: Can be played back on more recent media/DVD players

Also, I think 03SSMTL-S is correct in regard to Goose's question about ripping just a scene..you're going to have to burn the entire DVD media..then use some type of movie editing program (Windows Movie Maker or try SoundForge's Vegas 4.0).

Make the DVD or Scene into a .iso or make it a .vob or whatever, the VOB should play with a DVD Video Player on the comp, the ISO you will need to get Daemon Tools, it will make the ISO look like a real drive and than you can play on the DVD Video Player

I guess I was under the wrong impression about DVD burning/ripping. Maybe I looked at it as similar to a music CD, where you would pop it in and go to itunes and click "import", and you would have those files on your hard drive.

I thought you could do a similarly easy thing to DVDs. Guess not (or maybe you can?)

I copied a few .vob files to the hard drive, but it won't play with the DVD viewer (power DVD).
