DVD Ripping Software?

What software do you guys use to rip dvd's to your hard drive? I used to have DVDXcopy Platinum and AnyDVD but lost them from when I had to recover a crashed computer. I don't think that software could rip a dvd to a hdd in .avi format or any other as they were used to just copy a dvd, so I am looking for a software that can.

I heard good things about DVD Decryptor, but can't find it due to it being forced out. Also has anyone heard anything about Fast DVD Ripper PRO??

Let me know what you guys use as I don't want to carry dvds with me when I travel. Thanks.

Use VLC. Point it to the VOB files.

or you can use any program that will rip the vob files and then use handbreak to convert them to any format you want.

AnyDVD HD here. Not freeware, but worth every penny.

DVDFab is good stuff too.

And +1 on VLC.

I know, I know... I have to use Windows Media player because I travel for work with a work laptop... we are not allowed to install other software on the machine.

I was just looking for a software that would rip the dvd to an avi or other format without having to utilize multiple programs to get the end result.

DVDFab and dvd decrypter you should still be able to find dvddecrypter I've never had a problem finding it. Problem with decrypter is that it doesn't work on newer DVDs, they've started switching it up and DVDfab is updated often so when a new scheme comes out DVDfab is all over it with an update that works with it.

Also the handbrake VLC combo is good for ripping on mac.

I've ripped over 300 DVDs in the past few months using a combination of those three programs

Anyone have issues with DVDfab when ripping to .mp4 file? Everything works fine in VLC on playback but with Quicktime it's choppy. So I use dvd decrypter and handbrake and playback on Quicktime is fine.. annoying...

FTR, I've ripped over 300 DVDs in about a 2 month period of time and I've experienced choppyness on a few DVDs using handbrake. I noticed it on The Matrix and Princess Mononoke. It probably had something to do with the way the DVD is authored but by default I have Handbrake set the Frame rate to "same as source" and on all the other ripped movies that I've watched it's worked fine but on these two I've had an issue where things would stutter through the whole movie.

So I did some troubleshooting and fixed it by setting the Frame rate from "same as source" to 23.9997 which is the default frame rate for movies but setting it manually fixed the issue. So maybe the DVD was authored wrong and the frame rate setting isn't configured correctly causing this issue. So check that setting on DVDfab.

Oh and in regards to quictime vs VLC in my experience the choppiness was also worse on Quicktime X than VLC but Windows Media Player was the least effected of the players I tested

But as with all my tech advice take it with a grain of salt, see my sig below.....

My go-to is DVDFab to VOB, and then Handbrake to the Apple formats. Longer, but the price I pay.

Never a problem, unless DVDFab can't read the disc.

When you're saying handbrake are you meaning dvdfab? or are you trying to say you've seen the same issue in handbrake just few and far between? I've never seen the issue in handbrake just dvdfab.

If DVDfab can't read the disc which happened quite a few times then I could usually get it to work by firing up my MBP popping the disc in there and using solely Handbrake (and VLC) to decrypt the DVD and re-encode the Video. In OS X you can use the combination of Handbrake and VLC to perform both tasks, VLC doesn't have to be open it just has to be installed and handbrake does the rest.

Unfortunately this doesn't work in windows however it is about half as fast as the DVDFab/ Handbrake combo since it encodes in pretty much real-time.

I used DVDfab to make an unencrypted .iso file of the DVD and then I pointed handbrake at said iso and let it do its thing. I never used dvdfab to encode the video file, I'm too picky it probably doesn't have all the options I'm looking for that handbrake has. I also used DVD Decrypter in place of DVDfab. I'd be decrypting two discs at the same time (I have two DVD drives) one using DVDfab the other DVD decrypter and then I'd build up a queue in handbrake using the decrypted ISOs as the source files while at the same time on my mac I'd have a DVD being ripped using solely Handbrake.

It was a crazy efficient assembly line in fact the guys from History Channels' Modern Marvels came by to get some footage and do some interviews. They should have a 30min episode on me in the next season of Modern Marvels.....

I don't think you're impressing anyone...

So your answer through all the babbling is that you don't use dvdfab and can't answer my question. Except you claim to have seen it once or twice using handbrake.

I wasn't trying to impress anyone, I just think you're in a pissy mood for some reason. I thought I made it clear but I guess not.

To answer your question was I having the stuttering problem using handbrake that you were having when you used dvdfab.

Yes.

and was the stuttering worse with quicktime than VLC.

Yes.

So have I had the issue using DVDfab?

no.

But I've had it using handbrake and was able to fix it. So what does that mean?

That it might not be a problem with DVDfab at all and actually might be a problem with the DVD. So if you take the advice that I gave in how I fixed it in Handbrake (changing the frame rate option) then doing the same thing might very well fix your problem in DVDfab.

The issue I have with DVDFab is that I'm using the free version that's several releases old by now. I need to pay up when I redo all this shit.

Nah, it's not just one or two dvd's, it's all of them. And everything looks fine on VLC. Wasn't sure if it's the current version of dvdfab that has issues or not. They works fine using handbrake. It's very odd...
