Default passwords for new cable modem
My mother just received an upgrade to her internet speed via the local cable company. They installed a Motorola SBG6580 DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
The user guide states:
'PROTECT YOUR NETWORK - CHANGE THE DEFAULT PASSWORDS!
Default passwords are commonly shared on the Internet. Protect your information and your network from unauthorized access; change the modem’s default passwords BEFORE connecting to the Internet.
Use an Ethernet connection to change the passwords. NEVER configure your modem over a wireless network connection.'
Her set-up is just for home use, with the cable connected to the back of the modem, with no other networking functionality.
Is this recommended for her added security?

Thanks in advance.

That model is a combo Modem AND Router AND WIFI.
They are suggesting (rightly so) that you change the ROUTER password for the administration of the router. Usually it's Admin/Password or admin/motorola.
It's suggested to change it via cable because you will lose connection if via wifi and may not be able to get back in.
Once the box is connected to the interweb, connect a computer to it with a network cable and open a browser. In the address bar type in 192.168.0.1 (this is probably the right address, but there should be a manual with the box telling you the correct address). Once there, change the ADMINISTRATIVE password for the box. This is DIFFERENT from the wifi password (you should also set this up). The admin password simply lets you log into the router and make changes to things like the wifi password, routing rules, etc...
