Decent Hard Drive Deal

160 GB
Barracuda 7200RPM
Normally $119
After Mail in Rebate $39.99

This is for the folks who don't mind mail in rebates and like buying things from tangible stores instead of waiting for shipping....pretty decent deal

More info if people are interested:

Barracuda 7200.7 series drive with 8MB cache using PATA.

Review Link

Review Conclusion:
Both the parallel ATA and serial ATA versions of the Barracuda 7200.7 extend the series' legendary reputation for whisper-quiet operation. While the standard parallel ATA version also continues the line's tradition of lackluster performance, the serial ATA unit, equipped with its 8-megabyte buffer, turns in much more appealing numbers. We have every reason to believe that the PATA Barracuda 7200.7 Plus, also outfitted with 8 megs, would turn in numbers similar to that of the SATA unit. Seagate finally has a drive on its hands that approaches the speeds delivered by Western Digital's latest Caviars.

The StorageReview.com Safe Buy Award Simply put, this designation means we'd purchase this product without regret. Sure, there may be a slightly better, slightly faster, and/or slightly less-expensive model from a competitor, but you can't go wrong with this particular unit. This award is applicable, of course, to all units at the top of their class, but also applies to units that, though not quite best-of-class, provide a strong showing nonetheless. The SATA and Plus models, when first introduced, carried a significant price premium over the relatively inexpensive standard PATA 7200.7. At the time of this writing, however, the difference has narrowed somewhat- expect to pay ten to twenty percent more for a 7200.7 with an 8-megabyte buffer. Competitive speed combined with exceptionally quiet operation earn the SATA 7200.7 and the 7200.7 Plus a StorageReview Safe Buy designation.

Unlike previous-generation Barracuda ATAs, such as the IV and V, the standard 2-megabyte 7200.7's low noise floor no longer lets it stand out from the crowd in the face of increasingly quiet designs from manufacturers such as Maxtor and Hitachi. Those interested in the standard 'Cuda would be better served by considering the competition or Seagate's own SATA and Plus models.

ATA is a BUS so you would need an ATA adapter like this one: http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...342&pfp=SEARCH

Unless you already had one.

The adapter you linked to won't work for this drive. That's for Serial ATA (SATA), this Seagate drive is Parallel ATA (PATA). If kensteele doesn't have enough connections, something like a promise controller will work fine. Newegg has it for $25 + shipping ($28 total). kensteele, post you make/model of Dell and we might be able to tell you if it's possible. If you're not opposed to opening your case, you could also look and see if there is room to put the second hard drive. Sometimes there isn't enough room, or no drive rails to conect it.

The ATA adapter in the link is for SATA device. The HDD on sale is a regular IDE/ATA HDD.

Kensteel can add this hdd to his Dell system if there's an available slot open.

OOPS somebody beat me to it ;p

If you're not looking for a deal, then this is what I'd recommend for a nice SATA drive:

Looking on the back on my computer, there appears to be one empty slot and a couple that are filled but might be unused. I haven't open the box yet (that's going to take some doing) but I'm hoping you guys can tell from the config if there's room. Thanks again.

Looks possible to me:

http://support.dell.com/support/edoc...4550/specs.htm

The link says your system has 4 DMA channels and two bays for 1-inch–high IDE hard drives. Your config only lists one hard drive and a DVD drive. There should be available connections for two more devices. You may need an ATA100 cable if the system doesn't already have one, and that should do it.
