Considering trading iPhone 5 for Samsung Note 2

I have an iPhone 5 and it's nice and everything, but it's just not that interesting. My last phone was a DroidX. I went to the iPhone because all of my other electronics are Apple (Macbook Pro and iPad 2) and I just thought I'd go for the trifecta across the board. But iOS is just boring. I was out the other night and saw someone with the Samsung Note 2 and I about shit my pants. That thing is ridiculous. I also saw the 5" HTC DNA is coming out soon. Anybody else have an iphone 5 and thinking about swapping for a new droid?
Thoughts?

Which model 5 (carrier, color, storage) and how much are you looking to get for it?

Verizon, black, 16GB. Don't really care how much I get for it, was just thinking about trading it straight across for the Note 2 or DNA.

been reading DNA doesn't come near Note 2..
5" screen isn't going to appreciate 1080p capabilities and etc etc

I'm still waiting for my Note 2 to come out on Verizon (stupid verizon for taking time to promote DNA and delay note2) but I'm on the same boat as you. I've been on iphone for few years, owned macbooks here and there, and ipad2. iOS is getting boring and not much has changed since iOS4 for my taste.

Oh so Verizon Note 2 isn't out yet. Guess it was a different carrier for the one I saw. Yeah, I don't know how necessary 1080p is on a 5" screen, although I'm sure in a side by side comparison the DNA will look better than the Note. I like the in-between size of the DNA (still huge) but that Note screen is just epic. Quad-core verses dual-core on the iPhone too.

The Verizon Note II won't be out til the 29th. At least that's what they're saying. The Droid DNA comes out next week. The major problem for the DNA will be the battery for that phone as they only put a 2020 mAh battery. The Note II has a 3100 mAh battery and should last a good day and a half from what people are reporting. All the Note IIs are the same across all carriers except for the CDMA radios etc so what you saw is what you'll see on the Verizon version plus their tacky logo on the home button.

You can probably do a trade on Craigslist but make sure that its not stolen because you will not be able to activate it if it is. The best thing to do is call Verizon on the spot and verify the ESD is clean.

The battery life and the camera are the two main things keeping me attached to the iPhone.

Shipped BY the 27th is the latest word. The local Verizon store just told me yesterday (in person) the 27th. Wouldn't be surprised if it's out before then, say like maybe....oh, I don't know.....the 23rd??

We shall see.

Why wouldn't it fit? Its actually slimmer than the original Note just slightly taller. If I can fit a Nexus 7 in my pocket I don't see why you couldn't fit a Note in there, original or II. My friend has the original Note and he has no issues pocketing that thing.

Battery life and camera on Note II are great so you shouldn't have to worry there. The DNA camera also looks like it should be fine if its similar to the One X. Battery probably not. TheVerge released their review of the DNA but it feels like their reviews have gone downhill recently. They didn't even explore the camera or the battery in great detail like they normally do. I would wait to see what the others have to say on that matter.

It will fit fine unless you have to sit on the bed to cram your pants on...

As already posted, plenty of people fit the Note and Nexus 7" tablets fine in a front pants pocket. Won't be any different for this phone.

Here's a link to a couple of guys who have already done the "pocket test" in person (start at #36):

If you're putting a Nexus 7 in your pocket you either wear sixe XXXXXXL or you wear some baggy ass pants sagging off your ass.

And whenever I see someone walking around with a Note hanging off their belt up to their face...I just have to laugh, it looks so stupid.

Actually, quite the opposite. I'm pretty skinny (Asian genes) and rarely wear baggy jeans. Trust me it fits just fine in Slim Fit Jeans and the like. Maybe try it out yourself. And yes people who put the Note to their head look ridiculous. However, most of them rarely use the phone function.

If you dont use the phone function...than whats point? I thought the idea was the hybridization of the two.

I wouldnt want anything bigger than an iphone in my pants pocket...Im not even sure I'll like the added length of the iphone 5. Uncomfortable is the word that comes to mind.

But hey, to each their own.

Pocket Test Video for Note II

"Sure, it's big. It looks like Flava Flav should have it on a gold chain around his neck..."

Forward to 9:20 for the pocket test.

The length of the i5 makes no difference in pockets.

Note 2 looks pretty cool...

I think he meant to say the Nexus. The size of the phone being too big or uncomfortable is relative, really. Coming from a DroidX, the iPhone 5 feels small to me. I don't think I'd mind the size of the Note 2.

The voice feature is an extra. Samsung advertises it just as much. When you see the commercials they put out for the Note II, the phone functionality is not what they primarily show for this device. Its a tablet alternative mostly and a phone secondary. Also, having phone functionality does not mean just talking on the phone. Texting, surfing the web, watching videos are far more used than voice phone calls nowadays and the data 3G/LTE helps for connectivity. Its the trend, people are making less and less phone calls.

Most people that have smart phones rarely use the voice feature any more. Everyone's busy watching videos, texting, using Whatsapp, iMessenger, emails, etc. I average at around 10 minutes a day tops when I used to use more minutes a few years ago. My main usage is texting and surfing the web. The carriers are aware of this which is why they're no longer charging for the minutes but by the amount of data you use. No this isn't the scenario for everyone but it certainly is the trend.

I agree with the boring part regarding iPhone 5, but I don't see myself carrying Note II either. My best friend has it, he loves it, and needs both hands to work it and he cradles it, because if it falls, he he he... bye bye Note II

^^^ until you get used to Android (couple days) you will miss your iphone a lot....since Android offers you more options (what contacts to display, frequently contacted contacts, customize home screen, customer launcher, customize vibrations on notifications, etc etc) you will be like "WTF are all these options"....but give it couple days and you will do just fine

Well - you're not going to be bored, that's for sure.

I'd say the biggest things to remember are:
1) The Note is more a pocketable two handed tablet than a large smartphone. Don't expect to be able to use the phone one handed.

2) Android is just plain different from iOS. Remember that you can change practically anything on the phone that you don't like. I don't use many of the stock programs because I just found other ones I like better.

3) I'm not sure if it's on there by default (for some reason, it's not on most US phones), but the multiwindow bar can be enabled/disabled by holding down the back button.

I had been thinking of doing the same thing...a friend of mine told me he sold his iPhone5 on craigslist for almost $800 and went back to his Droid Razr.

But yeah, I'm already over this iPhone...but never had an android phone before...hope syncing my music collection and the music player is just as good if not better than the iPhone

The Verizon Note II will have multi-window out of the box. I think the AT&T variant is still waiting on an update.

DoubleTwist and a few other apps in the Play Store can sync that stuff for you:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...2lkUGxheWVyIl0.

If you haven't already, sign up for Google Music:

https://play.google.com/music/listen

^Upload your collection to Google Music so you have access to it via any browser, or the Google Music app. Its a little bit harder to organize playlists compared to iTunes but it can automatically upload your stuff to the cloud for you so you can just stream your playlists. You can also download your songs if you don't have unlimited data. Its 20,000 songs for free storage. Songs bought from the Play Store don't count against that quota.

I've been using Note2 for past few days and it's like a totally new world!

I have a big hand.. I can partially operate the phone with one hand just fine..

Regarding the multi-window, not sure if it's only for verizon, but the feature has to be enabled per app via recompiling with few lines of codes added.. otherwise, app has to be released with it.. kinda sucks

The app recompiling to use Multi-Windows was done on purpose by Samsung to not piss off Google and app developers. Its what happened to the now defunct Onskreen Cornerstone from which Samsung based their multi-window idea from.

http://www.geek.com/articles/mobile/...oogle-2012109/

The article above sheds some light on it but the headline is a little misleading. Onskreen allowed ANY app to use the multitasking windows and CyanogenMod was about to implement the idea. A bunch of Android devs threatened CyanogenMod and any other ROM that used the feature to be removed of Play Store access which of course makes Android unusable. The reason was that apps were not going to scale properly into the multi-window view and would lead to bad/negative ratings from users despite them not mentioning that their app wasn't optimized for the multi-window view. By making the developers recompile their app, Samsung is basically making developers check their app to be compatible with the multi-view before they get the negative reviews.

With all of that said, there is a way to make any app compatible with the multi-window feature if you're comfortable decompiling/recompiling the apps yourself:

I'm not too clear on Samsung's role in this. There are plenty of apps that I have seen in Korean Galaxy Note 2 and some Korean apps that I use that are used in the multi window feature.

If multiwindow was 'open season', this is what's going to happen:
1) random person buys the phone
2) random person tries playing angry birds in a window
3) angry birds doesn't work
4) person immediately moans on the internet about how Multi window, samsung, and angry birds sucks.

This is good for nobody. If people were reasonable/logical, they should realize that apps can't be expected to resize any damn way they want (hell, you can't even do that for games on windows). In an ideal world, they allow every app to be resized and there's a disclaimer - 'not all apps are going to like this, but this isn't necessarily their fault'.

But that's not how people work, sadly, and I totally agree with google banning this ability, for now.

I feel goodle should (will?) eventually allow you to run an app in a fixed 'legal sized' window, like windows lets you do for games. That's not going to break anything. But Arbitrary sized windows? That's a nightmare.

There are ROM hacks to allow any app to run in a multi window - the ROM I have has it. You get weird results with some apps.

On a side note, I sure wish google play would let you download apps that are marked incompatible for your device. Disable the rating if you must, but there are definitely apps incorrectly flagged, and that's really annoying.

- Frank

^What he said. Lol. Maybe I made my post a little too long. Oh and there is a way to get the incompatible apps. Search Google for patched Play Store, you'll find plenty. You shouldn't need root. I'll try to find one off XDA.

You can also check out http://www.1mobile.com/ for the legit free apps that you can download and sideload.

Here you go, DPI hardset, No restrictions (country, device, etc.):

http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1580827

^I guess you do need root. I always thought you could just install it over. I haven't been unrooted in a while so you could try installing it over then restarting. Sometimes you need to clear the Google Services Framework and Play Store data to get it to work.

How to install:

Rename file to "Vending.apk" and copy to /system/app/Vending.apk. Make sure to uninstall any updates of previous versions first. Root Required. If you are running ICS 4.0.4, "Vending.apk" might be substituted for "Phonesky.apk".

NOTE: If you are testing a "DPI Hacked" version of the Android Market and you are still experiencing incompatibilities with certain applications or the changes are not "sticking", see post #92 in this thread for further solutions. The following link explains what additional patches may be needed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...9&postcount=92
