thats a cool job, i wouldn't call it a stupid job at all. i'd get bored of it after a little.... i'm sure they need engineering in their background to land that job. vzw rarely hires those without degrees for most any position. i should drop him an email saying i saw his article, lol

Every cellular carrier does this. I personally know 2 guys at Sprint who drive the "loaded" van around town. In addition, the manufacturers Samsung, Sanyo, Motorola, Nokia, etc. they drive test each and every phone model before launch.
Particularly with CDMA, you have to drive test in the real work outside of the lab environment. The network is really complex. It's more than just where is the nearest tower. It doesn't take a genius to drive test but it does to design, maintain, tweak, and troubleshoot. Ask Fotis.
It's not a stupid job at all. But after awhile, it would get boring. It probably doesn't pay alot either.

i used to do drive test for clearnet (now telus mobility) in vancouver when i was doing my coop terms... this is when clearnet 1st started building their CDMA network in vancouver.. i had to go up all these buildings and towers and stuff to see the base stations and adjust atennas... it was fun... i got to drive around in the beautiful weather.. and it was quite exciting being there when the 1st base station came up in vancouver

The drive testing that handset manufacturers do doesn't help the network at all... not sure why that is being mentioned.
Drive testers are not geniuses ... it depends on the company. We call them "Baseline Technicians" ... they aren't engineers. They gather the data by driving, and process it back at the office. The network performance engineers use that data, in addition to the switch data, to tweak the network. The planners use that data to plan the next cell builds. etc.
It is so important, words can't describe, but that is one of the reasons why that company mentioned in the article above has the best network in the country.
Check the above paragraph, Chris.

like I said, you can put somebody in a car and call it drive testing, but if you don't have the money to fix the problems ... it's a waste of time.
