15". 13" too me is too small, 17" is way too big to lug around. 15 is a good size to lug around and have enough power and screen real estate to get your stuff done. Especially if you are doing photography. Imagine doing photo editing on a 13" inch display. I think it would drive me nuts, not that other's can't do it, but if I could have a bigger display, i'd do it.

You should check out the Mactracker app for desktop/iphone. Great app that tells you all the details/capabilities of mac hardware.

I have the top-o-line macbook air, it's plenty fast for photo editing. I'd wait though cause I think the MBP's are being refreshed soon smaller form factor etc

Really? The price I paid for my '07 15 MBP was the same price as my '09 27" dual i7. and I increased the specs on both of them.

Another Mac OS release, another moment of truth for those using old Macs. Apple's next OS X release, code-named Mountain Lion, will drop support for some older machines as the company continues to move forward with the iOS-ification of the operating system. The list of supported machines has not been publicly published (yet) by Apple, but a developer source has now passed that list along to TUAW after having downloaded the Mountain Lion developer release.

So which Macs get to stay on the island? According to TUAW's source, Mountain Lion will run on:

iMac (mid 2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, 2.4/2.2 GHz), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
Xserve (Early 2009)
Anything earlier than those machines will not be able to install OS X 10.8 from the Mac App Store. The list of those getting the axe include the original MacBook Air and all pre-unibody plastic MacBooks, iMacs from 2006, pre-June-2007 MacBook Pros, pre-mid-2007 Mac minis, the original and 2007 Mac Pro, and Xserves from 2006 and 2008.
Most of those machines were released early enough that it makes sense for Apple to drop support, but there are plenty of Mac users who like to hold onto old hardware and won't be pleased with the latest restrictions. Are you one of them?
http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/20...on-support.ars

While Windows 8 will be able to run on Win XP hardware better than Win 7 did....

15" MBP 2.2ghz quad core i7 = 1,799

27" iMac 2.7ghz quad core i5 = 1,699

27" iMac 3.4ghz quad core i7 = $2,199
(you can only get the i7 with the $1,999 i5 model)

For those prices I can build a monster desktop and use my existing 24" IPS display. Or even make a hackintosh... If I wanted OSX

Or an insane windows laptop.

I went with the mac because I wanted to have a machine running os x and windows without having to build a hackintosh. And other than a few hardware issues with my '07 MBP, it's still running today and I have no plans on replacing it with the new unibody design. I absolutely hate the new keyboards Apple has gone with. They are the most unergonomic keyboard design I have used thus far. Same goes for their magic mouse.

Do both of those come with the same hard drive specs and RAM?

I really liked the feel of the magic mouse But I haven't used a mouse since they came out with the magic trackpad which is just THE best.

And I actually really like the new keyboard design in the unibody...if I had to pick between the new design and my older powerbook...I'd go with this one.

Different strokes (huh huh huh)

Anyways do you guys think the 11" MBA would be good for editing photos or should I save more coin for a 13" MBP?

Too bad the quad cores come in on 15"
I bought my wife a 13" MBA for Christmas, it's OK for normal editing. But 128gb SSD is just too small for all the programs needed. Now there are some pretty good apps for photography that I've played with that do a descent job w/o having to put PS and/or LR and the plug ins I need on it.

I'm waiting for the new 15" MBA

Everyone's got different tastes, I've just had a bad experience with typing on the new keyboards. The extra spacing between the keys makes my hands hurt after typing for long periods of time because your fingers have to move further apart to get at the keys and the flatness of all the keys provides less feedback IMO than the keyboard off my pre-unibody MBP. This is one of those cases where it definitely was form over function.

anyways my aging core 2 duo E6600 machine is really pissing me off..

kinda lazy on re installing win 7, which im sure would fix 90% of the issues i got.

so im looking at my options on what to replace it with.

not sure if i want to go with a desktop or switch to a laptop.

PSA: Can your machine run Mountain Lion?

Whew, I think my MBP is safe for the upgrade, but next year I don't think I'll get so lucky.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/17/p...mountain-lion/

Ah, compatibility, she can be a cruel mistress, prone to leaving your favorite devices out in the cold and your wallet a few bills lighter. Apple's latest OS update, Mountain Lion, is no different. OS X 10.8 won't run on just any Mac, so, the question is, will it run on yours? Well, if you've got any machine from 2009 or newer the answer is yes. Older than that and things get a little bit shaky. iMacs are the most forgiving, with support starting on the mid-2007 models. Any Pro desktop from early 2008 on should be fine, while Xserves get cut off at early 2009 along with the Mac Mini. The original Air is already getting turned aside and you'll need a late 2008 model (or newer) for the update, while vanilla MacBooks are nearing total obsolescence as support starts with the aluminum models from 2008. Lastly, those of you rocking 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pros should be golden starting with late 2007 models. Oh, and any 13-inch Pro should be good to go.

well i build my computers to last me about 4-5years.

last one i built was dec 2006, before that was around jan 2002 and before that was i think when i started highschool in 1998

so im about overdue for this one.

i usually spend about a grand in parts for my builds so

i could go with a customized cooker cutter PC but i like picking my own parts from certain companies.

anyways

so about that mountain lion huh?

that's a bummer, i used to praise Apple for maintaining support for their oldest intels. I loved having one universal image.

Now i actually have to check the model year before deploying via DeployStudio...but then again most "old" MBPs and MBs look entirely different than the ones that will be compatible.
