I think if you buy the mac within 10-15 days of a launch of an OS you can get the upgrade for free. Confirm that with the store. So if you aren't sure about Lion get one with Snow Leopard.

FWIW, the Apple way is move forward. If you do get Snow Leopard don't be surprised if some Apple software comes along that requires Lion.

I know I can get Lion for free if I buy the iMac now. The question is is it better to wait until the iMac gets preloaded with Lion? Does it make any difference? My experience with Windows upgrades were awful.

The SL to Lion upgrade is cake (based on using the dev preview).

Im going to get the new Mac Air and with Lion on it and upgrade my new MBP to it.

I switched to a magic trackpad on my iMac a few weeks ago, in anticipation of Lion's arrival (I'm running it on my MBA already). I will never go back to a standard mouse. Took a few days to get used to it, but I like the trackpad a lot more than my magic mouse.

cheers,
robb

I just converted to Mac this pas Feb so all I know is about PCs and Windows. I haven't installed Mac OS on any macs yet since my first one came with Snow Leopard.

Tiger was 10.4, I think you mean lion. Unless Apple is willing to give out a disc then the answer is no he must upgrade to snow leopard and then to Lion since Apple is planning on only releasing Lion as a download on the App store and the App store will only run on Mac OS X 10.6.6 and higher and not on 10.5

YAY! I get to break my computer earlier than I thought.

I don't know if it's been discussed already, but it'll be interesting to see how corporate environments roll out this update if it's only sold through the Mac App Store.

I wonder if you can take the downloaded iso or something and burn that onto disc?

Or better yet...upgrade one clean hardware line (an Imac) and clone that disc to other iMacs but then that'll constitute pirating OSX Lion

Hopefully...this method will work:

Creating a Bootable Install Disc for Mac OS X Lion

This is pretty easy. These instructions are born from the 10.7 developer preview but should remain identical come time for the July public release:
  • Download Mac OS X Lion from the Mac App Store as usual
  • From the Mac OS X Finder, locate the Mac OS X Installation file that was downloaded, right-click, and “Show Package Contents”
  • Find and open the “SharedSupport” folder and locate a disc image file called “InstallESD.dmg”
  • Copy “InstallESD.dmg” to your Mac OS X Desktop, this is the Lion disk image and what you’re going to create the bootable DVD from
  • Now launch Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/), pop in a blank DVD, select the “InstallESD.DMG” file, and click on “Burn”
After your disk is done burning, you’ll be able to boot from it with any Lion compatible Mac by holding down C during boot up.

I want a 15in MBA with hi-res matte screen and 512GB SSD

I think they'll eventually drop optical drives but that probably won't be until the next version from now, when Intel starts shipping their next gen Intels with 22nm CPUs

Of course once Windows 8 drops and it runs on ARM chips they'll be even lower power than Intel chips that Apple uses and then laptops are going to get really small, thin, cheap and crazy good battery life....

After reading that article, i'm confused about this ...

Lion Server will also be available as a $50 download
I thought that Apple was releasing only one version which included all the server functionality??? Or was it that they were simply going to start including some of the server features in the standard version?

Server is an add on to Lion that you need to pay extra for. The rumors originally said it would be included free.

How to create Lion Boot Disk
http://www.informationweek.com/byte/...p-os/231002151

The only problem with this is that the Install Mac OS X Lion is not in my Applications folder and I don't see a way to download it again from the app store
