The Apple TV originally was a way to get iTunes content mainly video into your living room. Apple has learned that no one wants to rent their TV shows or movies from the iTunes store. So the next one won't be iTunes only they'll allow netflix and hulu, since it will supposedly run iOS and use ipad like apps expect other videos sites to make apps to work with it as well (for ex dailymotion or FoD). I'd expect it to run an A4 processor have 512mb of RAM have a different UI then the touch based iDevices and be smaller than the iTV and low powered.
For ports I'd expect HDMI, component, optical, wifi and MAYBE Ethernet. You'll probably be able to use the iPad or iPhone as a remote too

I don't see myself getting one then.

I'd hop on these quick over a Roku but they don't have built in wireless. The cost for a bridge/modded router exceeds my need to stream from my laptop. I'd watch wayyyy more Netflix than streaming stuff and the Roku is under $100.

The Sony box looks nice, but not sure I dig the playstation 3 UI (forgot the name of it.)

I pulled cat5 to mine. Streaming HD over wireless does not always deliver the results you want. Only thing I wish they would add is the playstation style fast forward preview thing where it creates a cube at like 1min intervals so it's easy to jump far into something.

Apple's September media event kicks off on Wednesday, September 1st at 10 a.m. Pacific. The annual event typically focuses on Apple's iPod line, though recent rumors have suggested that the Apple TV may finally be getting a revision.
Rumors
Here are the major rumors heading into the event.
- Apple TV - A next generation Apple TV based on iOS, priced at only $99, as well as support for Apps.
- iPod Touch - Backside camera, mic, new shape, front facing camera, possible 3G and even a Retina display.
- iPod Nano - Smaller, square shaped design with a 3cm x 3cm touch screen. Case manufacturers have already been producing covers for the unannounced device (see above).
- Other updates to iTunes including TV show rentals and longer song previews.
Speculation
Meanwhile, here's a collection of fun speculative content that we can't verify, but in the run up to the event may inspire some interesting discussion:
- iPad 4.0? - We expect Apple will announce their plans for the deployment of iOS 4 for the iPad during the event. It's unlikely Apple will be able to launch tomorrow as Apple still needs developers to update their apps. So, hopefully we'll get a roadmap and a developer beta of iOS 4 for iPad.
- 2.8" iPod touch? iLounge suggests that perhaps we will see the long rumored 2.8" iPod touch emerge to fill the gap left by the former iPod nano.
- iPhone as Apple TV Remote? iLounge's Charles Starrett speculates that the rumored $99 Apple TV might actually require an iOS device to serve as a remote. Beyond his speculation, we'd actually heard unconfirmed whispers of the same, so it seems within the realm of possibility.
- iLife Mystery App is a Make Your Own App Tool? Rumors of iLife '11 suggested a brand new app would be introduced with the iLife '11 suite. We've heard an unconfirmed whispers that the new app could actually be a way for end users to create simple apps and deploy them directly (not through the App Store) to their iOS devices. Is Apple returning to their Hypercard roots? It's hard to say how feasible this would be.

We'll be providing live coverage on Twitter at @MacRumorsLive as well as major updates here on the site. Our main news Twitter feed is @MacRumors. A Spoiler Free page is also available for those who want to watch the event fresh.

So you remember that whole debacle that happened at WWDC where the iPhone 4 couldn't get a good wifi signal cause there was over 500 wifi networks in the room due to bloggers bringing myfi's to liveblog the event. What was the root cause of that problem? The problem was there were so many people there live-blogging because that was the only way Apple allowed to satisfy the demand people had to follow the events live as they happened. A person doing a live A/V stream was frowned upon by Apple and if they found someone sending a live stream of the event that person go kicked out.
So to solve this wifi problem brought on by tons of myfi equipped live-bloggers Apple will for the first time since I can remember (but I heard they used to do it) be live streaming video of the event themselves. so you no longer need to follow a live-blog that paraphrases what is said into small blurbs, you can get all the details as they're announced. Only catch is that it will require a Mac running safari , iphone or iPad. So it will apparently use some proprietary HTML5 coded thingamajig that will only work in safari, so much for OPEN standards. I wonder if I spoof my browser user string to look like Safari in Chrome that it will work?
Anyways it should be on apple.com tomorrow as the event happens. I'll be sure to check it out on my brand new Apple Server that I only bought so I can hate on it (that's another $1000 to the evil empire so I can troll more of their shit!)

For non-supported readers who are desperate to watch the stream close to live, it seems likely that you will be able to watch it -- at least in stops and starts. The HTTP Live Stream protocol is based on very standard technologies. The stream is simply provided in an MPEG2 playlist (m3u file) that is added to as the stream continues. These standard playlists will load in VLC for both Mac and Windows. VLC, for example, will play the above sample stream using this url:
There is a catch thou..

It won't be, it's based off iOS. So it'll use an app like the one for iPad/iPhone.

I wonder how apps will eventually play out. If you need to buy three different versions of apps to have one on each kind of device (iPad, iPhone, iTV) then it's a fail. I want to buy an app one time and be able to use it on everything.
I have no idea if that's true or not, but I have seen different versions of apps referenced for iPad and the other iOS devices.

There are universal apps that work on both iPad/iPhone.
The developer just needs to set it up that way. Afaik.
