Apple: iPod News and Discussion Thread
weak sauce served with a side of fail.
I made it through the comments on Engadget (although I really preferred AZ's private thread). The event has left almost everyone universally disappointed.
This will be interesting to see how Zune fares now that both sides have shown their cards.

iTunes 9 requires Safari 4.0.3. Oh but wait, my Safari 4.0.3 was a corrupted installation. It didn't install and managed to fuxor many other things on my Leopard installation. Guess I'll have to wait till I get SL installed which I can't do until I get some important stuff done for work.
I really don't like the location of the camera lens on the new ipods. It should be behind the screen. I think it's gonna be hard to hold it without getting your fingers in the way. If you hold where the screen is it'll to be hard to see what the camera is shooting. If you hold it where the controls and camera are it'll be hard to press a button without wrapping your fingers around the back of the device and over the camera lens.
once itunes 9 is open, it does operate smoother scrolling through the artwork, but using 200 MB RAM it ought to. Also, the minimize and close buttons in the upper right seem to be working like they should, with the last several versions, sometimes i'd have to click twice for it to register.
Wow Steve sounds weak! He doesn't have the energy he used to. I'll have to watch the rest of the event to see for sure.

Moot now, but couldn't you create a smart playlist filtering by metadata and sync that?
Not sure.
I'm wtching the vid now...you enable your account on both computers...but its adds it the overall itunes on the other computer.
I think, I'll have to explore more when I have time...which wont be til next week

This would be great for media sharing. I have a spare comp, just run a barebones OS with iTunes and hook it up to my HDTV.
for the person who got screwed with the MBP purchase, check macrumors.com and then go to the buyer's guide...it tells you whether it's a good time to buy or if an update is coming soon.
as for the touch...i was hoping to trade up to one with a camera (mine keeps freezing, apple said if it kept happening they would replace it, and i was waiting for the update). maybe i can get a 32 out of it..

the iPod nano does NOT take still pictures! I should've went with my gut feeling on this. Apple Rule of Thumb: If they don't specifically say whether it can or can't do a specific feature, it probably can't.
They didn't add it cause it would've made the even device thicker! Oh noes! Teh thickness!!!!

NY Times asks, Steve answers: Why no camera on the iPod touch and no stills on the nano?
Well, looks like we weren't the only ones wondering about the two big questions of the day -- the New York Times sat down briefly with Steve Jobs post-event this morning and found out the whys and wherefores on the following:
* Why doesn't the iPod nano take still pictures? Jobs says that the tiny teensy CMOS sensor in the nano isn't up to the quality standards needed for stills; it's too thin. "The sensors for doing a still camera... they are just way too thick to ever fit inside the Nano."
* What about a camera for the iPod touch? The product path for the touch, apparently, is that it's a great gaming device and it's the lowest investment option for getting access to the App Store; given that, the push was to get it down to a price point everyone could afford instead of adding new features like a camera. "So what we were focused on is just reducing the price to $199. We don't need to add new stuff - we need to get the price down where everyone can afford it." Not to say it won't ever happen.
So much for my idea of a firmware update to the nano enabling still images down the road.

Thanks for the link to the site. I'm in the process of trying to decide what I want get to replace my desktop and also pick up a small machine to setup as a server. I can't decide.
The line where he says they didn't do it to keep prices down is BS, wait till the BoM comes out from iSuppli for the iTouch and it costs less than a $100 to produce. They just didn't want to sacrifice their 50% profit margins by adding it.
Wow so the iTunes store requires Safari 4.0.3 (already mentioned) but Safari 4 requires Leopard so all you Tiger and earlier users (Anhedonia) you now cannot access the iTunes store. Way to abandon your customers, Apple! But you'll just get a pass for it like you do with all the other dick things they do.
I discovered this cause my sister is using a Powerbook G4 on Tiger and I just updated it to iTunes 9 to play with the homegroup... I mean home sharing feature.

Home sharing will work between two accounts. You create home sharing under one account and then join home sharing with that same account on different computers. When you want to play DRMed music from the iTunes store that was purchased under another account you'll have authorize your computer for that account. So if you had 5 iTunes accounts and 5 machines you could authorize each machine for each account and with home share share the music between each account and machine.
