Thanked 17 Times in 3 PostsExplanation of the AT&T Order Status Screen
I posted this at the end of another thread last week - but I think it might be worth reposting here:
I spoke to an old college buddy last week. He works as an operational manager at the AT&T Wireless Central Distribution Center outside of Arlington, TX - and he said that this whole thing was (obviously) a nightmare and he was in the office for 48 straight hours.
He explained the vague terminology of the AT&T status system. Apparently there is no stock in the CDC right now, but Apple is (and has been) transmitting databases of S/N's in batches of 35,000 to AT&T. He said Apple is the only hardware vendor that operates this way prior to a launch. They wait until the last possible minute to hand the hardware over to AT&T in order to prevent early leaks.
When your status reads "PROCESSING" without the "BACKORDER" flag, it means that your order number has been married to an iPhone S/N, it will be shipped in the first batch, and you will likely receive it on the 24th.
If it does have the "BACKORDER" flag, it means that they received the order, and they anticipate enough stock for the 2nd or 3rd wave, but they have not paired your order number to the S/N of a phone (and this is changing day to day as they wade though the system) - so if it says BACKORDER now, it might not next week prior to the fulfillment launch.
If you have an ALERT flag (which looks like a red exclamation point) that's bad. It means that they oversold their anticipated stock (since automation went down several times they were processing some orders by hand in stores) and you might not get your phone until July.
The long and short of it seems to be, if it says PROCESSING you're going to get the phone on launch day. If it has the BACKORDER flag, it MIGHT come on launch day (or the flag might clear between now and the 23rd) and if you have the ALERT, you're out of luck.
He also said there were thousands of duplicate orders - so right now a lot of the confusion comes from matching up the right capacity phone (16 or 32) to the right order. This is apparently being done by hand - so anything can happen to any order.
Hope this helps shed some light. Take it for what its worth .

Outrageous expense compared to what? Most smartphones are going to cost between 80 and 100 a month, plus 200 to 300 for the device. That's right about where the iphone is.
The hassle only exists for the early adopters, if you wait a couple weeks, it' no hassle whatsoever.

For non-jb'ed phones you can get the iOS4 now. Some will get the updates in minutes but the backups are taking forever. My kid chewed up my wife's charging cable so we'll do both tonight when I get home.

Gotta agree with Gibson... I use my phone for pretty much everything now. Basically anything I can do on a computer, I can do on my phone. Sometimes I don't even use my computer at home... Easier to pick up and do stuff then lock it when I'm done. Oh and I'm typing this from a cafe btw
E-mail wherever, manage whatever I need to do online, instant messaging (free unlimited texts basically) and I only pay 63 a month for my phone. soon it's going to be like 45 a month once I drop down to the 200mb plan.

Anything running a smartphone platform basically. Blackberry, iOS, Android, ect. Granted, dumbphones have come a long way, they just lack the ability to do things as well as smartphones can. Exchange support, google maps, Webkit browsers...things like that the Envy can't handle.
Also, smartphones in general use more data, so you're not going to get those $10 data plans as an option. You're looking at about $30/month for data alone, then another $40 or so for voice.

$10 a month for Internet? Is does it have 3G support? And which service plan is only $10 for Verizon? Unless you're both on the same family plan... The cost for her monthly plan works differently.
Also... I can go on a road trip and just bring my phone, earbuds and a cable charger. No need for magazines or anything. Everything I need for entertainment is on my phone.

Guess I'm not sued to the all-in-one concept, which I think is stupid. That is my own opinion, so flame away. I just need a phone to make phone calls when I need it too. I'm not THAT connected to the internet, FB, whatever to warrant the cost associated with one of those things.
I also at people paying $300-$400 for those things.

I guess you could get that out of the provided information. I was just trying to figure out if and when I could expect my phone. It appears that the information was correct for me as now my former 'processing' order status has changed to 'shipped'.
Anytime initial demand far exceeds anticipated initial supply, some confussion will happen. AT&T is not the only vendor in a 'pickle'. Reports are that worldwide, just about all vendors have suspended pre-orders or stopped quoting shipping dates. Adding to the BS is people like me that placed duplicate orders.
I also have a phone 'reserved' at my Apple Store that will likely not be picked up. That is my backup plan in case the delivery doesn't happen. FWIW, Apple listed my order at full price. When they sent a letter today saying to go online and check, it told me that I'm not qualified for an upgrade.
Like most that are interested in having the new toy asap; I'm just trying to make it happen w/o standing in line or waiting!

FWIW, I agree with you in some instances. My wife uses a prepaid plan from TMobile by choice. Once a year I put $10 on her account and we are good to go. It is all she wants and needs.
Calling people stupid because their needs and wants are different than yours is a little over the edge.

Isn't choice a great thing? There are plenty of people laughing at you too!

I had the Samsung Impression which per CNET is probably the best ATT non-smartphone. This thing made calls, 3G, full browser, touch screen, slide out keyboard, large screen etc. I only paid $10/mo data on it because of my family plan. But the phone had so many problems and glitches. Plus for day to day use it sucked. Mind you this is the best non-smartphone that I've had. I got my wife an iPhone and I was hooked. I think like a week later I got mine. Some people have that mentality for cars. I can care less of what I drive right now. I'd love to have a new Acura but my 10 yr old Accord takes me from A to B with no note. I'm not going to make fun of the new Acura owners.

just using your post to show why i havent left tmobile. ( i will once this phone is released and the hooplah is down enough to buy one in store)
but i pay 59.99 a month for unlimited everything.. including my data/text and phone plan.
for me, to have an iphone, is $25 extra a month, on top of that i wont be allowed unlimited data use. (hopefully i never max it out)
if your already an ATT user, its probably not much of a change from the other smart phones... but for us who have been with tmob/verizon/sprint for years... its probably more like +$300 a year for phone service just to change over.
the money wont bother me, but i'd say in comparison, it is the most expensive phone to own/use.

you know you can make a payment before the due date and you can make multiple payments within a month. CC aren't going to stop you from giving them money early

?
thats not what i meant.
for me i like to pay off my cards in full every statement.
im just saying that apple charged my credit card for the current statement that ended on the 20th. and the due date for that statement is 7/15
had they charged me today, the 21st, it would fall under the next statement and that statement would be due on 8/15.
if that makes any sense.
