Apple: iPhone News and Discussion Thread

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster has been saying for more than a year that he expects Apple’s (AAPL) to introduce a “family” of new iPhones in 2009. On Monday afternoon, less than a week before the start of WWDC, the company’s annual developers conference, two reports surfaced that suggest his expectations may finally be realized.
•An unnamed “trusted source” told Engadget’s Chris Ziegler that the PTRCB — the board that certifies that new cellular devices comply with GSM network standards — has approved new iPhones with 4GB, 8GB, 16GB and 32GB capacities. The PCS Type Review Certification Board was established in 1997 and includes AT&T (T) among its members
•The Boy Genius Report, a site with unusually good sources in the telecommunications industry, posted what appear to be leaked snapshots of Fido Solution’s product roadmap for the second and third quarters of 2009 that include one slide showing a $99 4GB iPhone 3G. Fido, formerly Microcell Telecommunications, is a subsidiary of Rogers Wireless (RCI), Canada’s largest cellular carrier.
Neither report has received independent confirmation and there are elements of the second that raise eyebrows. Among the specs listed in the Fido snapshot is “Video Calling (iChat)” — a feature that would require a camera mounted on the front of the iPhone. This is not inconceivable, but it would give the new iPhone two cameras — one on the front for iChat, the other on the back for normal photos and videos. That’s a lot of optical hardware for $99.

Updated my iTunes to version 8.2(?) installation in the last couple days. The update was said to include compatibility with iPhone 3.0 software. We can't be too far away from the 3.0 release.

I'll probably be upgrading. I still have the original iPhone. The sad part is that it works just fine, but dealing with edge is starting to drive me crazy. Also I could really use the increased storage space. Now what to do with my old phone.....it's unlocked, so maybe i'll keep it around just in case I ever need to go to europe or something.

Anyone seen any mention of whether Apple stores will be equipped to tell if you're upgrade eligible for the cheap price? I'd much rather visit the Apple store than the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is my local AT&T store. I'm pretty sure I should be eligible for the cheap price though since I've had the original iPhone from back when the did the first price drop.

Since I got the iPhone I have missed MMS messaging, not that I sent a lot out, but did get funny jokes and pics from people.. Well I was excited to see that 3.0 FINALLY had it, and now AT&T announces it will be available LATE summer due to the fact that they have to go and change every effing iPhone user to unblock MMS.
Maybe they shouldn't have blocked such a basic feature in the first place you damned idiots. I confirmed w/ the "Gold" 3.0 7A341 OS that there is absolutely no sign at all of MMS in iPhone 3.0
.. for now anyways. Maybe there will be something new on the 17th and they're just trying to piss off the people who install it early

Just as an FYI - The iPhone is price protected; so any hardware discounts you might be thinking about will not apply. Not sure re: discounts on data or voice service [voice.. maybe.. data.. prolly not]

do you have the 1G iphone? they said back in march that the 1G iphone wouldnt be getting MMS.
and i dont blame AT&T for no MMS, i blame apple. their OS didnt support it so hence why AT&T blocked it. no need to let the iphone do MMS if the OS cant do it.

We decided to get to the root of the problem by calling up the makers of the chip--Infineon. We contacted an Infineon representative in Milpitas, CA to uncover the details. The gentleman that answered the phone kindly explained that there is no way the Infineon chip inside the original iPhone is incapable of receiving MMS since that function relies on software rather than hardware.
Finally, after browsing through a barrage of websites in a multitude of foreign languages, we discovered that there are two other mobile phone models that use the same Infineon chip as the original iPhone: the BenQ-Siemens M81 and the BenQ-Siemens EL71. Both of these phones contain the PMB8876 chip. While neither phone contains the multitude of features the iPhone boasts, both are equipped with MMS ability.

What i dont understant is why is apple holding some of its features for the new iphone only. they say its a power issue, i call BS. Most old windows mobile 5 phones can hold shit to the iphone power wise, yet they had most of the same features years ago in. The iphone has its interface, but apple is severly kicking its users in the nuts everytime they release a new model. I understand that tech gets outdated, but even microsoft gave original zune users all the software updates of the the newer models. I still have my 3g, but i'm glad i got the G1 to hold me over till the Touch Pro 2 comes out.

My question is this....
When I upgrade my software on my 3G iPhone, what things will I still be missing if I don't purchase the new iPhone 3G S??
And, with the software upgrade to existing 3G iPhones, will they be as fast as the new 3G S iPhones?

i can answer part of this.. no, it will not be as fast as the new 3GS. i also doubt you will have video capture.

that sums it up, it wont be as fast because the iphone 3G S has a faster processor.

If anything, the cost to upgrade the software on the iPod Touch is a little stupid even if it is only $10.
