Apple: Internet Connectivity Issue
While transferring files from my NAS to my iMac I lost the ability to connect to the Internet from my iMac. During this time period I had logged into my routers admin panel and update the mac address filtering. I didn't think it would mess up anything, at the time, but later realized that when I had inputted my mac address for my MBP, I lost connectivity on it too. So I went back in and cleared out all of the mac address filters I had put in for my iMac and MBP. My MBP is working fine, but my iMac still will not connect to the internet.
The iMac does...
If I ping a domain, say www.amazon.com, I get a request timeout. I thought it may be a DNS issue and Apple recommended going directly to 17.149.160.49 which is the IP for apple.com, but that didn't work either.
Nothing has resolved the issue. Got any tips or suggestions???
Cliffs: My MBP, HP Wifi enabled printer, iPhone, are all able to connect to the my router and internet just fine. My iMac which is able to connect to my router, is unable to get to the internet.
The iMac does...
- Attain an IP over Airport
- Attain an IP over Ethernet
- Can connect to my Router
- When Network Diagnostics are run, I get 6 green lights for both Airport and Ethernet and it reports that everything is fine.
- When I toggle the service order between Ethernet and Airport and vice versa, and if I have FF open prior to switching the ordering while it's attempting to load a page, FF will for a split second pull in some data from the internet but then dies.

Can you plug the iMac directly into your modem? No router.

You can't ping a domain. Can you ping an IP address? Like the one Apple gave you? Or Yahoo is: 69.147.125.65
Just checking to see if you can get past the router...
Does your router have a diagnostics screen that it can ping from?

This coming from Mr. Nodez himself.
Good call! I have FIOS, so I connected an ethernet cable to my FIOS router and my iMac came back to life. However, my setup at home is such that I have a Netgear SRXN3205 router that I piggy backed off the FIOS router. I did this because the Netgear router provides great coverage, is dual band and supports Wireless N. I have my NAS connected to it so that I can have faster speeds accessing data from it from either of my mac's. I set the ethernet to inactive after it worked with my FIOS router and when the iMac connects via Airport to my Netgear router it still doesn't work.
I guess it's a router issue.
Was that a statement or a question? If it was a statement, I believe you may be incorrect. I've pinged domains numerous times from my computers using terminal.
When I try to ping using the diagnostic tool on my Netgear router, which is connected to my FIOS router, none of the pings work. I get a request time out. However, If I do a traceroute off of it, it appears to be successfull.

Ok, so I enabled the wireless radio on my FIOS router to see if the airport on my iMac is a problem, and I was able to connect to it just fine and get on the internet. So this definitely narrows the problem down to the Netgear router. I'm gonna try power cycling it, again, to see if that helps.

So I just unplugged the Netgear router for 5 minutes before giving it power again. No luck. MBP continues to work fine, iMac doesn't.
Guess I'm gonna have to try a hard reset on the stupid thing.

Just one last thing to check. Make sure the MAC address in the "allow" list on the Netgear actually matches the MAC address of the iMac.

Numerous times. For every reboot of the router I rebooted the machine to play it safe. Also rebooted every time I adjusted the mac address filtering to play it safe.
Yup, checked it too, all is correct.

So I did an export of the router settings to see what is actually being stored on the router.
Turns out somethings aren't right.
1) the MAC address filtering for my MBP, for both wired and airport, which I deleted, are still showing up
2) the MAC address filtering for my iMac Airport setting is still showing up even though I deleted it as well.
So I reset the router, reconfigured it all and we're back in business! Very odd though that the MBP would work fine but the iMac wouldn't.

If you had it you'd know. Here's my reaction after installing dd-wrt for the first time, like a kid in a candy store....
I literally felt let down by you guys that I wasn't properly informed of how awesome dd-wrt was until I installed it for myself. Someone should've pulled me aside and had a heart to heart with me about the awesomeness of dd-wrt, still bitter about that.......

^^ excluding the bug I found in my netgear router, my netgear router is pretty feature rich already. Not to say that that DD-wrt isn't feature rich, I think it's great improvement for many of the lower model routers out there that are put out by netgear and linksys for the home market. The router I'm running is this one:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16833122236
Been running it for a few years now IIRC, and today was the first time I've had an issue with it. All of the linksys routers I've tried were and had I known about DD-WRT at that time I definetely would have given it a try. My BIL is running it on his linkysys and has said it's a great upgrade.

I tried 3 linksys routers and a lower model Netgear prior to purchasing this one. All of them gave me issues with uptime, coverage area, configuring and other stuff that escapes me now. So I splurged a little and picked this one up. One of the issues I had to overcome at our last place was coverage area not to mention that at that time I had hardware that was running B/G and then my mac stuff running N. I think all of my B/G hardware is done with now, but it's nice having the dual band just in case. When I was with Sprint I was planning on getting a wifi card, but when we switched to AT&T that went out the door so having been able to make use of the VPN functionality, yet.

Whats up with RDX owners?

on DDWRT. Ive got two old Linksys routers here, one in the basement and another as a repeater on the second floor. I get full coverage throughout the entire house and outside across all .75 acres I have. My old $200 Netgear struggled to cover the entire first floor from the basement, and both of the Linksys routers Im running only cost me $100 and about 20 minutes to setup.
