It's not a normal charger that they were trying to produce.

They wanted you to be able to just throw down your iPhone, AirPods and Watch, all three on one charger, without having to worry about where they were placed, or having to worry about magnets and connections.

It's a great idea, but turned out to be harder to build at any kind of price near what people might pay.

Probably why they don't waste too much money to rush with it. By now, we all have all kinds of chargers for combinations of Watch, iPhone, and AirPod.

LOL.... Hope springs eternal! :-)

I've always wondered why with the OEM Milano bands, you can easily completely separate them by moving the loop end through the hole. Maybe they've intended all along for the newest Watch to be charged like this, because you wouldn't otherwise want to do this so easily.

I still have no desire to upgrade to this model, I'm eyeing a 2015 rMBP on eBay though

The design flaw behind MacBook Pro’s “stage light” effect

The Touch Bar generation of MacBook Pro always had its quirks, but the thin-at-all-cost design may finally be proving more trouble than it was ever worth. The latest issue to crop up—dubbed “flexgate” by one of our users, Alex—reveals that the compact design for the display’s flex cables is prone to fatigue and failure, leading to a host of display problems that can’t be easily (or cheaply) fixed.

The display cables in question, loosely wrapped around the display controller board. The cables are pulled taut as the display is opened, causing them to tear over time.

Of course, any product produced at the scale of the MacBook Pro is bound to run into a few QC issues—that’s understandable, providing the company can own up to them and repair or replace the affected users’ machines. But for most of us, there’s a limit to how many unnecessary repairs we’ll put up with on an expensive “Pro” laptop. Problems like the keyboard (which has, thankfully, been at least slightly addressed by Apple), poor thermal performance, and questionable battery performance and lifespan point to a bigger picture: This MacBook Pro design is a bit too far on the form side of the line between function and form that Apple is known for walking so well.

With that bigger picture in mind, let’s address the latest problem—which, to me, is the nail in the coffin for these laptops.

None of the Lights

The issue is fairly simple: the current generation of MacBook Pro laptops (2016–present) uses flexible ribbon cables to connect the display to a display controller board beneath the Touch Bar. These cables wrap over the board, where they’re secured by a pair of spring-loaded covers—and they’re subjected to the stress of bending with every opening and closure of the laptop. Within a seemingly short time, those cables are starting to fatigue and tear. The backlight cable is generally the first to go, producing the infamous “stage light” symptoms, and eventually
when the laptop is opened more than about 40°.

The 2016 MacBook Pro’s delicate display cable setup, dissected.

When it first debuted, the design seemed fine. But as always, the devil is in the details. Apple opted for thin, fragile flex cables as opposed to the beefier wire cables used in previous designs that could be routed through the hinge instead of wrapped around it, helping mitigate the stress of repeated openings and closings. But the bigger problem is that, in an apparent effort to make the display as thin as possible, Apple designed the cables as part of the display, so they cannot be replaced. This means that when (not if) those cables start to fail, the entire display unit needs to be replaced, as opposed to one or two little cables—effectively turning a $6 problem into a $600 disaster. Our good friend Louis Rossmann captured the problem on video; can you sense his frustration?

This problem is frustrating on multiple levels. It certainly feels like this could have been avoided entirely if so many sacrifices weren’t made for the thin-and-light form factor, and it definitely could have been avoided if Apple had just made the cables modular (which may be another thin-and-light compromise in its own right). Perhaps the most frustrating aspect is Apple’s slowness to acknowledge the problem and make amends with customers. A few determined folks have managed to get their local Genius Bar to replace their screen on Apple’s dime, but for now it seems that for every person who succeeds, many more are rejected—or simply end up paying for a new screen out of pocket without realizing how widespread the issue is. There are also multiple people who claim to have started threads on Apple’s support site only to have them deleted.

For now, the issue is only affecting the Touch Bar generation of MacBook Pro. The new MacBook Air doesn’t use the exact same display cable design, but it looks to have a similar vulnerability—its cables wrap over their display board, and appear to be part of the display. We’ll have to wait to see if they exhibit the same cable failure, but color us “not-surprised” if they do.

Alex has started a petition in which he “kindly ask[s] Apple to launch an extended warranty program addressed to this issue as soon as possible.” The petition is currently hovering around 2,000 signatures. If you are affected by this issue, or if you (like us) have passionate feelings about repair and how long a $7,000 laptop should last, let us know in the comments, give Apple some feedback, and add your name to the petition.

Louis can lick my balls. His only existence is to try to make Apple look bad. Ive had no issues with any of my 2016+ Macbooks.

I've had some intimate time with this particular issue and I wouldn't buy a touchbar MBP. Preference comes down to it too, the butterfly keyboard feel is awful IMO.

I've seen the keyboard issue. I know a guy who plugs in an external keyboard to his MBP because a couple keys on it don't work

I learned last night that you can now install NVMe SSDs in 2013-2015 Macs. The Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Pro.

You need an adapter which costs about $15
Amazon Amazon

But you can put many NVMe m.2 SSDs in there. The Late 2013 rMBP that I have has a PCI 2.0 2x SSD but the port is PCI 2.0 4x. I will be testing this when all the parts arrive on Monday.

Nice! Let us know how it works out. I would love to give my mid 2015 a storage increase. The OWC upgrades are too pricy.

You can't use any SSD though, the 970 Evo Plus is not compatible. I bought that one first and had to return it

Currently going through the process right now. The only thing I did different was I didn't use the USB flash drive to create the macos installer. I just used cmd + option + R to boot into the latest Internet recovery OS available for my Mac which is currently Mojave. I then open Disk Utility and created a dummy APFS partition called Macintosh HD so that the 970 Evo would initialize. Then I just did a Time Machine restore from the external SSD I connected. That's where I'm at right now and so far everything is working fine.

Supposedly 2013-2014 Macs like mine need to reset sleep in terminal afterwards using: sudo pmset standby 1

And I'm done. This was easier and quicker than I expected. backup to time machine. open up Mac, install adapter and NVMe SSD, boot option cmd R to latest internet recovery, disk utility create APFS volume, time machine restore from backup, reboot, login to iCloud, and authenticate. Done.

That's about a doubling of disk speed for me. Not a bad improvement for $175, and about an hour or less of my time

To be fair the Mac Mini has FileVault enabled and the rMBP didn't when the speed test was done after the upgrade

It’s a shame the 2012 Mac mini only takes SATA 3 based SSDs

I’d upgrade to the new mini but i still won’t have a dedicated GPU

If only. My manager booked a meeting room at our location, which has a huge display and everything. We'll be watching it live, at least.

Idk who gets to go to the actual conference. I think we're too low on the totem pole

Spec bumped iMacs!

21.5” iMacs get 8th gen Intel CPUs
27” get 9th gen.

Vega graphics (like on the MBP) are now an option.
21.5” = Vega 20
27” = Vega 48

asthetically the trash can Mac Pro looks nice. IMO.

Usefulness... debatable.

anyways hopefully we get more info soon on the updated modular high throughput Mac Pro.
We’ll probably get more info at WWDC June 3-7.

then again it’ll be so expensive I won’t be able to afford it.

Seems like AirPower might be dropping soon, but it might only charge 2 devices. The pics they pulled from Apple's website doesn't show 3 devices now

So, can you clarify? You need a merge of the thread you provided into this thread...?

You should be able to charge three devices if you place them carefully.

And remember that it's likely that the Fall 2019 iPhone (whatever they decide to call it) probably has through the device charging for two of the three new releases.

I think.

Probably.

Well. Maybe
