App recommendation thread
Well, I finally got a new phone (mytouch 4g), and i've been app trolling.
Someone asked for a list of apps in the Android thread so I thought I'd make an app thread.
I'd be highly interested in hearing other apps/app ideas you care to recommend. Or if you find something new and spiffy, to let everyone know.
My apps are all Android, so I've added a brief description so you know what the app does.
( I assume most apps have an equivalent on other OSes)
Anyway, stuff I have now:
Things you could find online, but much easier to have a quick app for
----------------------
Shopsavvy - scan a barcode, shows you price comparisons with other stores
primospot - shows where you can legally park, and for how long.
Movies - Movie theater listings.
Phone OS tools:
Theft-Aware - an amazing phone security application.
ADWLauncher - new file launcher, nice for customizing desktop and making 'folders' in my 'all programs' folder.
Advanced Task Killer/System - task manager of sorts for Android
Droidwall - firewall. By default I block all apps so rogue apps don't bleed my data plan.
Tasker - an 'If X then Y' program. like, 'if web browsing, turn off screen timeout'.
'If phone powers down, vibrate first so I know about it'. (otherwise it's a silent shutdown)
etc. Very useful.
Terminal Emulator - terminal window. needed for rooting.
Visionary - temp root program.
SetCpu - overclocking/Underclocking program.
Titanium Backup - Always keep a backup!
Wifi File Explorer - copy files to/from your phone via Wifi
Stuff to make the phone easier to use:
Call Confirm - require an extra click to make calls (too easy to accidentally call people otherwise)
Smart Vibrator - have different things (calls, SMS, certain people) vibrate differently.
Battery Indicator - show battery remaining as a %
Current Widget - show amount of current in/out from the phone. Useful for comparing chargers.
Screen Filter - widget to reduce brightness of screen, to save batteries.
Random Tools:
Compass
Barcode Scanner - I see QR codes more and more.
Bubble level - Bubble Level. One neat feature is you can 'lock' it so it remembers the current angle, if you want to 'match' angles elsewhere.
Mobisle notes - notepad/outliner. Good for 'to do' lists with categories/dates/etc
Retro Calculator - since it's hilarious
PDF viewer - adobe acrobat reader - good for user manuals.
gstrings - guitar tuner
Instant Heart rate - it seems to work - uses camera to read pulse. (!!)
GPSlogger - log your tracks - nice for recording hikes.
Google Sky Map / Star Chart - star maps.
Shootme - screencap program
Camscanner - take a picture of something, converts it to pdf. Good for receipts and stuff.
DOF Calculator - Calcuate DOF for camera lenses
Info tools / Reference materials:
First Aid & CPR - FREE first aid manual, with videos! Nice.
U.S. Army Survival guide - hopefully don't need it, but it's free. Interesting reference to keep on you.
Zip code tools - looking up zip codes/area codes
Data Counter widget - shows how much data used so far (I'm on a capped plan)
rawphone - Information about your phone
Widgets I like:
Weather Widget
Sundroid - has widget for sunrise/sunset/phase of moon
No lock - disable lock screen widget.
2G-3G On/off
Power Widget - quickly turn on/off GPS/Bluetooth/Wifi/screen
GPS based stuff:
Places - show 'what to do' around my area
Well, long and full of blahblahblah, but hopefully someone finds it useful.

Just downloaded Google Skymap. ![Too Cool](https://acurazine.com/forums/images/smilies/toocool.gif)
It's probably pretty obvious, but every Google app is worthy.

Awesome Drop is pretty useful if you want to transfer small files from the computer to the phone via wifi. I find big files to take too long to transfer through wireless.

So I guess I'll make my list since I tend to just tell everyone to go to AppBrain and see what's hot over there. Although, I did make a list that got lost in the Android thread. I'll split up the posts cause its gonna be a long one.
For Rooted users:
For Rooted users:
- AdFree: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultExactly as the name of the app.
- AppWidget Picker: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780828Consolidates all of your widgets into categories instead of spreading them out. Doesn't seem to work with the Sense Launcher but should work fine if you're running ADW, Launcher Pro, etc.
- CacheMate: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultCleans your cache that accumulates as you use your phone. Can help speed up the phone when it becomes sluggish. Does somewhat the same thing as CacheCleaner.
- CacheCleaner: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultLike above, cleans your cache but you can schedule this one automatically to clean once a day, twice a day, etc.
- PhoneLocator Pro: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultRequires Root to turn on the GPS when it is turned off.
- Root Explorer: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultExcellent File Manager for root users that allows you to install apks, modify system files and everything on your phone.
- Terminal Emulator: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to run ADB commands on your phone without having to connect it to a computer. With root, you can run superuser commands.
- Titanium Backup: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultA MUST HAVE for root users who continually change ROMs or for any user in general. Allows you to backup all your apps and their data settings which allows you to easily transfer them if your phone gets wiped, etc. License key is recommended as it automates re-installs.

Non-root apps:
- ADWLauncher Ex: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultThis is not the free version as mentioned above. This one has more features and slightly faster than the free version. Awesome home replacement.
- ADW Notifier: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultGoes along with the ADWLaunchers free or EX version. It notifies you of the number of texts, missed calls, emails, etc over the app icon.
- AudioManager Widget: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultVolume manager that allows you to see all of your volume settings with a widget. The pro version allows you to create profiles which you can select on your desktop.
- Barcode Scanner: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultBarcode scanning app that allows you to scan any barcode and compare prices online.
- Beautiful Widgets: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultFor non-HTC Sense phones who want the weather widget lookalike. Very customizable and the widgets can be themed.
- Camera 360 Ultimate: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultPretty cool camera effects app. For those interested in LOMO, HDR, and other camera effects.
- Chrome to Phone: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to send links from the Chrome Browser on your desktop to your phone with a click of a button. I believe there is a Firefox equivalent as well but I haven't used it.
- Documents To Go: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to edit Microsoft Office 97-07 files.
- Extended Widget Controls: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultCreate 1x1 to 1x4 PowerControl Widgets with whatever buttons you want and even customize the background, color, etc.
- GasBuddy: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultI think a lot of you guys are already familiar with this one.
- Google Goggles: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to do take a picture of something and it'll try to match it in the database. Works excellent for art and books. Its pretty iffy on translations although it can do it.
- Google Sky Map: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultStar Gazing app. Use this to show off to friends really. lol.
- Home Switcher for Froyo: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultFor those with Home Replacement Launchers like ADW, LauncherPro, and others. It allows you to switch between the stock home launcher and whatever other launchers you have installed.
- MIUI Music Player: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957651Pretty cool Music Player replacement that downloads album covers and Lyrics. Its always updating though so you kinda have to track it down on XDA.
- Miren Browser: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultI love this browser. It has replaced the default browser on my phone and its very customizable.
- Pure Calendar Widget: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultFor non-HTC Sense users who want a calendar widget that looks similar. He also makes Pure Calendar Grid Widget which is closer to the HTC Sense Calendar widget.
- Screen Filter: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to dim the brightness of the screen even further than the stock brightness control settings. Excellent for Super AMOLED users where the screen is still bright even at the lowest setting.
- Smart Keyboard Pro: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultMy favorite keyboard app. Very customizable including changing the height of the keyboard in portrait and landscape mode. Themes are also availble for it and has a calibration which is excellent.
- Tango: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultFor the phones that have a front facing cam. Allows you to make vid calls to other Android and iPhone users. Also works with the back camera but not sure how you would video chat that way.
- Vlingo: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultExcellent alternative to Google's Voice search. The InCar mode and safe reador modes are pretty cool. Safe reader will read out any notificaitons that come in to your phone to your speaker or bluetooth headset.
- Google Voice: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to send out unlimited texts and receive and forward calls to your Google Voice number
- Google Voice Search: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultI think everyone knows what this is.
- WiFi Keyboard: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultAllows you to control your phone from a browser with your laptop/pc keyboard. I use it to use my XBox controller and Xpadder since the Galaxy S uses a different bluetooth stack and won't let you use the WiiMote controller.
- WiFi Analyzer: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultHelps troubleshoot your wireless router. You can see what channels are best to set your router on to avoid interference.
- XDA: https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_resultSelf explanatory

So the creator of Titanium Backup just released a new awesome app. Haven't used it yet but its called Titanium Media Sync because there's no trial version yet. Hopefully, he'll have a trial version coming out. It syncs whatever folders you choose automatically to the clouds (Dropbox for now only it seems.). So you can lose your phone and won't have to worry about the data that was on it because everything is automatically backed up into the clouds and resynced when you get a new phone. I don't believe it requires root either so that's a plus for people who don't have root.
Buy it here at the intro price before he raises it:

Android just added their in-app billing. Tap Tap Revenge is now out in the market which utilizes the feature to buy tracks for the game:

A few other games are using it now and should be implemented into other apps in the future.

I'll one up your IP Cam Viewer and make this suggestion. Web Live Wallpaper:

I think I mentioned it in the Android thread but it got lost in there. Basically, it allows you to set your wallpaper as a webcam stream. It pings the stream however often you want it to.

Pro HDR Camera just got released a few days ago for Android:
https://market.android.com/details?i...=search_result
Like the iOS version, this utilizes true HDR when creating HDR effects and it has adjustments to the effects to your liking. The UI could use a little bit of improvement but the pictures come out really well on my Galaxy S running MIUI.

There is a really neat app called 'Gentle Alarm' which anyone with a smartphone should check out.
The cool part is you can set a 'pre-alarm' which fires off the alarm at about 1/10th volume, half an hour early. The theory is, it's only loud enough to gently wake you up when you are in a 'light sleep cycle'. If half an hour passes (which is enough time to get in an out of a sleep cycle), then your normal alarm fires off.
Quite amazingly, it works. Actually, I suppose you can emulate this by setting two alarms, but who needs that?

Wow they figured out how to run Tegra 2 games on non-Tegra 2 devices! Should work on all rooted Android devices.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSAJptywT8Q
It also works from PowerVR <--> Qualcomm <--> Tegra 2! That's pretty awesome!
