Full!screen+:

^Both need root but allows you to take full advantage of the screen. I love Gesture Control cause I can work without the buttons via gestures and with Full!screen+ you can overlay the buttons along with sliding gestures to do certain buttons.
That's a pretty sweet set up. How are you powering the thing? I think if you use the Pogo pins it should be able to keep up with the charging vs using a USB charger but that requires more work. Are you also tethering off your phone? I was thinking of buying one those tablet holders that come off the passenger chair but I realize I use my 7 more out of the car than in the car.
The 2nd gen Nexus 7 has a really nice screen and its blazing fast. Supercurio is creating a color calibrating app which he plans on releasing soon so for the photo nerds out there you can get professional grade displays on a 7" tablet. Combine it with USB OTG cable and you should be good to go.

I wanted to keep the setup very simple....my Galaxy note has CM10 and it power cycles every couple days....so I did not root the tablet....It runs very very smooth on stock 4.3....
If it powers down, I will have to take the AC vents out, reach in and power it back up....
but I connected the tablet using a USB and a 2.1Amp charger....so if the battery goes low, I just run a extension cord and plug the tablet in for the night
also by doing this if I have the sync the tablet of upload some movies from my laptop, I can do it without removing anything

Not a problem buddy....
I have to say that the idea came from Nitroviper....I had my Galaxy note in the dash, but since I can tether from my phone, decided to put a tablet in the dash....and lucky enough, Jerry (neibur) was selling the HVAC extended harness display....

Believe I got the update for the update that fixes the GPS/touchscreen bugs for the N7. I've had about 4 reboots that day.... They're lucky this thing boots up really quick... But I'm still wondering whats wrong

AmberB, not sure you can ever please a person like that. In four to six months of heavy use, any mobile device may start to show some lag...
Look at the Samsung Galaxy10.1 and the Nexus10?

Also with 4.3 devices should stop doing that as it supports TRIM.

Amended...no lag fresh out of box. She has Asus TF300 that lagged from first day. Not a power user, but she's got a nexus 4 and would like to have a decent tab. She likes the way my nexus 7 (flo) just works, but requires a bigger screen.

Nexus 10 is probably your best bang for your buck for a 10" android tablet.
Otherwise I'd endorse the Asus TF701 - I used to have the TF700 with the keyboard dock and loved that thing... I didn't like Asus' RMA department though...

Here's an interesting piece by Displaymate comparing the Nexus 7 (2013), iPad Mini Retina and Kindle Fire HDX:

http://www.displaymate.com/Tablet_ShootOut_4.htm
Finally, the iPad mini’s color gamut score is poor, too, landing in at just 63 percent. This had previously been highlighted in a separate report, providing consumers with a major reason to purchase the larger iPad Air over its 7.9-inch counterpart. The Kindle Fire HDX, on the other hand, scored 97 percent in this respect; Google’s Nexus 7 was awarded an impressive 103 percent.

I didn't even notice it but if you're running a stock KitKat build outside of the Nexus 5, the lockscreen notification bar and controls are not transparent/translucent by default. Luckily, there's an easy way to do it if you're running a stock ROM and are rooted:
Nexus 7 (2012):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...php?p=47537930
Nexus 7 (2013):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2528392
Nexus 4 (not a tablet but its the same topic.):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2527525
If you're running an unofficial CM 11 build, its already transparent by default. At least it is on my Galaxy Nexus.
Also just a heads up, my Nexus 7 was stuck in a bootloop and I had to flash/reflash the modded and stock version before it worked correctly. So you might want to keep a backup of your files just in case. Otherwise, you can always flash the original non-transparent framework-res.apk (provided in the links above as well) to get it up and running again.

Ok so I am looking to get my girlfriend a tablet for Christmas. I have narrowed it down between the Samsung Note 8 or the LG G Pad 8.3. Anyone have any opinions on either of them or first hand experience with those.

Probably the LG skinned one since 1 it is cheaper and 2 she probably wouldn't notice the benefit of Google Play one. Trying to keep it around $300. Note 8 is $329.99 and the LG is $299.99 right now. If I was getting it for me I would definitely get the Google Played Edition though.

I am not sure if she would use the stylus or not really. She wouldn't use it for writing. The only thing I could see maybe using it for was drawing apps. What do you mean about phone functionality?
#633
Phone functionality, as in will she use it as a phone? Not necessarily hold it to her ear, but with bluetooth headset, etc...
#635
LOL he already said he narrowed it down to those 2 and with a price limit. the Z tablet is neither.
CCColtsicehockey, if your gf will actually use the S-Pen (stylus) and require phone stuff (on the international version of the Note 8.0), then get the Note 8.0.
But, just about all of the S-Pen features are available on the G Pad 8.3 and you can just get a 3rd party stylus/your finger to use for that (might be cheaper than the price difference).
My take: G Pad 8.3's screen is better, I like the useful knock-knock turn on/off feature, the phone pairing feature, and I think it looks better overall compared to the Note 8.0.

She uses it off and on. Probably could get away with just a regular stylus to do it cause they are normally just doodle apps. No she will not use it as a phone at all.

The reason I don't believe the Google play model is really useful for her is she basically only will probably use it for Facebook, Youtube, and Internet. She only got her first Android device and S4 about 3 months ago and had had Apple devices before that.
Yeah the Sony is definitely out of the price range I am looking to spend. I want to get her some other stuff with the tablet for Christmas and trying to not break the bank at the same time.

She might learn to use it for more like a TV remote, dump in Chromecast and you can even stream her YouTube, etc.. to the TV, pair it to the S4 and she won't need to hold 2 devices when on the tablet. UI isn't that far off from her S4, so won't be that huge of a learning curve.
And aww what a good guy you are, spending more than $300 on your gf
And heck, you could even install Nova Launcher if you want that stock look

I think the G Pad 8.3 might be the winner.
