Matsui always seemed to get to us. Can't say his injury was any big disappointment for me.

The Sox had their chances to blow it wide open with the based loaded 3 times, and the yankees (crosby and damon) stealing away a couple of home runs...

Great game, but it sucks about Matsui... I can't watch the replays without winching... That looked like it hurt... alot...

The Sox have lost a couple of pitchers (Wells and Arroyo) and an outfielder (Coco Crisp) and seem to be managing, so don't count the yanks out yet

I was all but convinced that it was over for us after those plays, and after stranding 10 runners after 5 innings.

About Matsui (from my SI e-mail):

518 Consecutive games streak for Yankees outfielder Hideki Matsui, which ended last night when he broke his left wrist trying for a diving catch in the first inning of the Yankees' 5-3 loss to the Red Sox. Matsui, who will have surgery today, played in 1,250 consecutive games with Japan's Yomiuri Giants from 1994 to 2002, and in every game with New York since joining the team in 2003. His streak with the Yankees set the major league record to start a career and was the longest for the team since Lou Gehrig played in 2,130 straight games from 1925 to '39

On the trade, the Yankees had the 2nd year he was in NY (the Rangers paid the first on the trade), after that, they renegotiated the remaming portion of his deal. Normally, a player is dealt in a contract year and the team trading away eats the salary hoping that the incoming end of the deal pans out in their favor after the trade deadline. Then they become a free agent and test the market. Hopefully the team that grabs a guy like this gets a real benefit (like a ring) out of the deal and then lets him roll knowing they got a sweet deal. Is A-Rod really making a difference for that much a season? No way. His game is all fucked up the last 2 years. His stats may look good for NY, but for that much cash, they need a ring or two out of him. Then again, the Yankees have always been about paying too much for guys just to keep them off of another enemy's roster. Then it bites them in the ass when they have a $200M payroll and pay out $30-something in luxury tax...when they don't get past the 1st round of the playoffs.

Cashman isn't the idiot , it's Steinbrenner. Cashman understands the concept of the growing your farm system Steinbrenner is like your typical New Yorker everything is now.All professional athletes are over paid..really 1mil to throw, catch, and hit a ball is ridiculous.

It's still Cashman sitting on the other side of (or under) the table with these agents working the deals and signing them up. He could attempt to draw the line a bit.

Nah, you really can't say Steinbrenner is an idiot. Maybe a bad businessman, but not an idiot. At least he puts the revenues back into the team in the form of salaries, and he and the Yankees are great for baseball.

That being said, I hate the Yankees. I hate the way Giambi and Sheffield somehow get away with steroids living in the biggest media market in the world. I hate the Rodriguez persona. I hate the way guys like Johnson and Giambi and Damon sign with the Yankees under the pretense of "mystique" when it's really "my$tique". If that team plane ever goes down, I hope only Jeter and Rivera have parachutes. Those two guys can play for my Twins any day.

Since we're on the topic of the Yanks, anyone else kinda curious how Giambi got his hitting groove back? Or that "miraculous" turnaround last season...?

I think he's cheating.

Texas is pays him $10MM a year while the yanks only pay him $15MM for the remainder of his contract. Texas pays $60MM total just to get rid of him (of course, thats an extra $15MM taht they could spend on 1-5 other players). Yanks got a steal there for a fine 3rd baseman @ $15MM a year.

fuck A-rod, fuck giambi too, neither of them belongs there. Damon can go back to boston anytime he wants, although I can't say I'm dissappointed since he's made some catches this season that nobody on the roster before him would have made. Johnson can go too. Scheffield, I am indifferent towards.

Oh and someone please take the glove away from Bernie, hide it, burn it, throw it in the Hudson, just don't let him have it.

They ending up paying top dollar cause they have been getting the top free agents of the year. Remember when Jeter got his contract? I think Arod had just got his contract, and they had to base his value off of that.

Matsui got $21MM over 3 years which was a steal.

Sheff got $39MM but i think he had his choice at 3 otehr teams for like $36MM, so they really didnt overpay. That was the year Vlad was available and he got $75 for 5 years.

Giambi was one contract which they blew away all the others. I think they offered $40MM more than waht Oakland offered.

And Mussina's contract, was it for like close to $90MM?? Look at the big contract pitchers of that time, Hamptons contract (was it like $80MM?) with Colorado, KBrown's and Chan Ho's $15MM per?

Now Damon isnt a $13MM a year player, but is Beltran worth his $17MM per? id rather over pay for 3 years than 7 years

They had the money to blow, so they did
WHich makes us go buy tickets to see the game and blow tons more $$ on food and drinks there.

Ok, since i'm still stucka t work being productive, Ive compiled a list of otehr major FA signings/extensions to justify some Yankee salaries
Salaries hit their peak in 2000-2002 .

Look at the 01 signings of pitchers with big contracts, Moose, Neagle, Hampton. Think about that.
Look at the 02 signings. Giambi and posada. Bagwell was worth the money, Rolen, . But then Kendal, a better deal than posada? and then Sweeney the year after that.

Time to leave work, will debate more later

A Rod 10 yrs 252MM 2001-2010 Texas pays a total of 67M of his salaries from 2004 to 10:
Derek Jeter: 10-Year worth 189M signed on 2001- 2010
Mike Mussina: 6-Year worth 88.5M- 2001-2006
Jason Giambi: 7-Year worth 120M- 2002-2009
Jorge Posada: 5-Year worth 51M- 2002 – 2006
------------------------------------------------------------------
Bernie Williams 7 years $87.5M 1999-2005
Kevin Brown: 7 Years worth 105M 1999-2005
Sammy Sosa: 4-Year worth 72M- 2002 - 2005
Miguel Tejada: 6-Year worth 72M 2004 -2009
Manny Ramirez: 8-year deal 160M 2000- 2008
Mike Sweeney: 5-Year worth 55M- 2003 and 2007
Magglio Ordonez: 5-year worth 75M on 2005 - 2009
Bobby Abreu: 5 years worth 64M 2003 2008
Pat Burrell: 6-year deal worth 50M in 2003- 2007
Carlos Beltran: 7-year deal worth 119M 2005 -2011

Scott Rolen: 8-Year worth 90M thru 2002 – 2010

Damn!!!!! What's with all the Yankee haters

You guys just upset cause these guys aren't playing for your teams

Any other team that draws & has the history the Yankees have should spend the $$ if they have it. The yankees have done GREAT things for Baseball, & NYC.

You don't think that if the Bluejays had 200 mil to spend they wouldn't snatch up every player they could?
