Really, really terrible. NFL just officially suspended the game. I had it on recorder and I watched the hit a few times, it appears he took a helmet right in the sternum (not the head). Wondering if it's a heart issue now. Twitter, as of right now, just says hes been intubated and is in critical condition.

This is the speculation online right now.

What Is Commotio Cordis?

Medically reviewed by Angela M. Bell, MD, FACP — By James Roland — Updated on August 27, 2021Commotio cordis occurs when a person is hit in the chest and that impact triggers a dramatic change in the rhythm of their heart.

The blow could come from an object, such as a baseball or hockey puck, and may not seem especially serious in the moment. However, commotio cordis is often fatal.

Commotio cordis is an uncommon injury, and it most commonly affects male teen athletes. Without immediate treatment, this condition can cause unexpected cardiac death.

Immediate first aid treatment with CPR and defibrillation with an automated external defibrillator (AED) may be able to restore the heart’s healthy rhythm and save a life.

When I described what happened to my wife, that was her first thought even without seeing the video.

I was watching Yellowstone and turned the game on to see play was suspended. Youtubed the hit and didn't think it was that bad. Scary to see Hamlin just stand up to fall over again and almost die. Prayers for a full recovery for that young man. Hopefully his playing day are not over.

On to lighter news, GO PACK GO!

I read a story about a hocky player who suffered the same thing (hockey puck to the chest) and was back on the ice that season and played another 12 years. But that said, other articles are pointing to how freaking serious this is and while it's super rare, a lot of people don't make it. I suppose the good news here is he got treatment immeidately and the re-started his heart right away. But such a freak accident.

I'm no Skip Bayless appologist by any stretch but reading his tweet I can kind-of see what he may have meant, but he phrased it very poorly and it was absolutely the wrong time. It's all true this was an important game for playoff seeding and will have impacts to other teams, and something is going to have to get figured out, but last night was NOT the time to entertain even the thought of those discussions. This week isn't going to be the right time either until Hamlin stabalizes - that's got to be the focus. I don't know how the Bills even play this weekend. I've not seen any appology yet or retraction which is odd, considering the reaction he's getting.

and people watch and cheer on the NFL games but the dark truth is that it is extremely grueling on the players and many of them pay a big consequence later in life.

People watch Professional Boxing where the goal is to literally knock the person out. It's just where we are in the human timeline. We used to watch people being put in a pit with a wild animals and other gladiators fighting to death or almost death. Any sport where the goal is to stop you from going somewhere or to hit a hard object into a goal or net has a chance of hurting or killing a person. Any contact sport can be dangerous. I don't know what the future is going to hold, esports, robots, full body armor, etc but this is where we are and we are to blame.

If he doesn’t make, and I sincerely hope he does, it wouldn’t be the first time a player died of cardiac arrest on the field.

https://sports.yahoo.com/remembering...033107789.html

We don’t know if the hit caused the reaction or if it was inevitable, and we probably never will. Every year guys die of cardiac arrest in practices across the different age groups. I don’t think this is a “football is too barbaric” situation.

If it winds up being Commotio Cordis, there are examples of this from other sports too (hockey, baseball to name a few). It would freak me out though if I were a football player now because with all the focus on not being hit in the head or hitting people with your head, the chest and shoulder area are the prime body parts to collide with someone else.

Correct it was what he said but when he said it. It does have a lot of impact on many teams you are correct. This week won't be the time but things will have to continue even if he hasn't stabilized by week's end it will then still have to be discussed. I know there are a lot of dates in place for stadiums and what not so I don't know how you go fitting it in but not my job. You can't easily just add an extra week in the middle of things with stadiums being used for other things.

In case anyone was wondering about ff ramifications, this is from ESPN:

Due to the circumstances of Monday's Bills vs Bengals game, ESPN Fantasy Football will officially score fantasy matchups for week 17 and week 18 (if applicable) only after the Bills vs Bengals game is ruled final (either after being played or cancelled). For scoring we will use the official NFL player statistics for the game. Points for Bills and Bengals players will remain as they appear until the game is played or cancelled and will be updated following that time. This may impact matchup results, league champions and final standings for your league. The current matchup period will be extended until Thursday to support this approach. Our thoughts continue to be with Damar Hamlin and his family.

I've been wondering about that. I'm in a championship match in a ESPN PPR league, down by 27 points, but I still have Mixon. Seeing as he can pop off any game (like his 50+ point game earlier) and the fact I think this would game would be a high scoring game, I think I'd still have a chance (although some might say no).

Of course, the league commissioner could always make his own decision. This whole thing just sucks.

Sleeper gave us the choice - we can close the books on the season as-is, and/if the Bills/Bengals game gets played we could have the option to includ it. We chose to close the books and be done. Even though the championship game still had Mixon and Chase open on the team who was behind. It's just not clear what choices the NFL will have to hold this game. But there wasn't a huge amount of money involved. Some leagues have much more at stake.

Yea. This would be a nice payday for me, which is why I still hope there is some resolution. If it was a regular league I'd say be done with it.

I just watched the live interview with the hospital physicans. Basically they repeated the Bills tweet above about his status. They added he was able to communicate (written), as he still has the tube. He even asked who won the game. The doctors had a lot of praise for the on-field attention he got and how quickly he got it. They said next steps are to get him breathing on his own, but they did not give a timeline.

Incredible that he has cognitive function and didn't even lose memory of events if he asked who won the game. Long way to go still but I feared if he made it he would sustain memory or motor skill issues.
