NFL: 2019 Season News and Discussion Thread
#721
The NFL is a weird company.
First, a representative from the league called a select group of reporters last week and suggested they should be available on the following Tuesday for a worthwhile news development. The NFL wouldn’t say what it would be. Just that the reporters should be ready to share some breaking news. When the day arrived, the NFL called Kaepernick’s representatives for the first time in more than a year, instructing them that the league was willing to hold a private pro-day style workout for Kaepernick in Atlanta in four days. If he accepted, a memo would be sent to every NFL team inviting them to attend.
The league wouldn’t answer why it was suddenly making the offer. It wouldn’t say who came up with the idea. It wouldn’t say who would attend. And it wouldn’t say why the workout was roughly 96 hours away and on a Saturday when most NFL teams were preparing for a game.
But the NFL would say this: After nearly three years of waiting for this offer, Kaepernick had two hours to accept it.

So a 32 year old QB that hasn't played the game since 2016 with one notable season under his belt holding a workout is a "worthwhile news development".
No issue with him getting a shot, but the NFL falling over themselves to promote it is disingenuous at best.

Some have mentioned that he could be a suitable stand-in for the practice squad to emulate Lamar Jackson, though I doubt he would stoop to scout team level. Those guys are so important, but get paid peanuts.
CJ Beathard has some decent wheels, he had like a 60 yard run a couple of seasons ago. He did his best Wilson impression in preparation f or the last game, but hurt his back in the process

The more you think about it, the stranger it seems.

Less than 48 hours after offering to engineer a hastily scheduled and seemingly half-baked “pro day” workout for Colin Kaepernick, the NFL appears to have given the quarterback ample reason to pull out of the event.
Multiple sources familiar with the talks between Kaepernick and the NFL have told Yahoo Sports that several elements of the Saturday workout in Atlanta — which was proposed by the league under a two-hour deadline for a decision on Tuesday — are already running into significant issues. Chief among them, according to sources:
Thus far, those teams include the Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos, Detroit Lions, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, New York Giants, New York Jets, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Washington Redskins.
Interestingly, sources from two of those attending teams told Yahoo Sports on Wednesday that they were caught by surprise by the Kaepernick workout and were not advised on why the NFL scheduled it on a short-notice Saturday afternoon. One team source added that as of Wednesday afternoon, there was still no determination on who would attend the event for the franchise.
“We haven’t been told [why],” one team source said of the last-minute timing of the workout. “Other than that [invitation memo] and what is being said about it [in the media], I guess we’re all on the same track with whatever is happening. It’s not normal, but we’re just going with it.”
A third team — which will not be attending the workout — said that Kaepernick isn’t in its plans and that if he ever is, the franchise would prefer to set up a private workout rather than attending something orchestrated by the NFL.

Chief among them, according to sources:
- The NFL has refused to provide a confirmed list of team attendees before the event, allegedly breaking a verbal commitment between the two sides that was reached before Kaepernick agreed to the workout. The league has denied making such a guarantee and refused to give a reason for why the list will not be provided, sources said.
- As of Wednesday evening, no defined throwing script was provided to Kaepernick, despite the event being less than three days away. There was also no indication from the league who Kaepernick would be throwing to. Under typical pro day circumstances, a quarterback is aware of the receivers and running backs he will be working with, as well as a defined structure of the program to suggest how many throws and routes will be expected during the workout.

Where are they promoting it? Nowhere, no press release, nothing from NFL offices. All information has been release by the players people.

NFL is coordinating it. Their announcing it promotes it. But I'm splitting hairs - the NFL is involved is my point. Their involvement is disingenuous. Its a publicity stunt or an attempt to make Kaep look bad. But really the entire thing boils down to - why? Why him? Why now? Why in this manner? Why sponsor it when if teams really had interest they know where to find him?

The Browns were headhunting all game, before the helmet incident, Rudolph had been hit in the head at least 5 or 6 times, not to mention the hits on Juju and Johnson

Garett, see you next year. Pouncy enjoy a few weeks off. Rudolph, what a bitch, don't try and rip off someone helmet and get mad when they do yours. Oh Garett's a bully LOL!!! Looks and act just like that punk ass bitch on the Penguins.

That is embarrassing. What I did was foolish, and I shouldn't have allowed myself to slip like that. That's out of character. But a situation like that where it's an emotional game, like Larry said, and I allowed myself to fall into those emotions with that last play and what happened.

I get that. I’m not defending Garrett. I haven’t been able to watch much of his pro play, and I’m aware he has quite a few unnecessary roughness penalties. What he did was stupid and deserves suspension. I think Rudolph was acting like a bitch too.
In the next five years I bet Garrett is in the same league as Clowney and Kearse. Dude is a freak of nature. Hopefully he learns from this mistake.

It was a late hit, Garret had him pinned down long after the play, Rudolph was trying to get Garret off of him, and y'all want to blame Rudolph? Typical Jupy

Don't know that I agree with some commentators this AM that this should transition to assault. But Garrett took a huge, stupid risk. If he busted his head open with the hard side of that helmet, I think criminal charges start coming up. But that's what may have happened, not what actually did.
As for the rest of the game, boy these teams really don't like each other.

Agree. I think what led up to it was football players behaving badly, but it should have ended there. You just can't take a very solid object and swing it at another guy's unprotected head.

B.) He obviously did it with intent to injure. What if he hit him in the temple with the helmet and killed him?
Definitely a stupid thing to do no matter how you look at it, unless your Jupy and want to blame the guy who got busted in the head with his own helmet....

A.) He knew that Mason just came back from a concussion where a Raven's player left his feet and blasted him in the jaw and knocked him out cold (Not saying this should matter, but just that he knew about it)

And we shouldn't look past the fact Pouncy kicking him in the head on the ground too. There's a lot of "what if" scenarios there too that end badly.

— Browns DE Myles Garrett suspended without pay indefinitely, at least the rest of the season.
— Steelers OL Maurkice Pouncey suspended 3 games and fined
— Browns DL Larry Ogunjobi suspended one game and fined.
— Other players involved may be fined.

I’ve read at least three reports saying Garrett ripped off Rudolph’s helmet and hit him in the head with it. No mention of Garrett walking/getting pushed 10 yards away from Rudolph and Rudolph going back after Garrett to confront him. Maybe he was just going back to ask Garrett to politely give his helmet back? We all know that’s not what happened.
My only point is that taking one action in an altercation and claiming assault isn’t how assault works. Rudolph was the first to try and rip off anyone’s helmet, and he also went after the guy that ended up “assaulting” him?
