Classy move by the Steelers organization -Steelers will keep Ryan Shazier under contract, on PUP list
Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier will remain under contract for another year as he continues to recover from the severe spinal injury he suffered late in the 2017 season.
Shazier’s salary in 2018 was guaranteed for injury, so there was never any risk that he would lose pay last year, but the Steelers announced today that he will remain under contract this year as well. Although Shazier is still hoping to play football again, he’s not ready for that and he will go on the Physically Unable to Perform list.
The Steelers’ announcement said Shazier will be paid a salary, accrue another season toward his pension, and will continue to get the health insurance that all active NFL players receive.
“We will continue to support Ryan’s efforts to return to play,” said General Manager Kevin Colbert. “Although he won’t be able to help us on the field in 2019, his leadership, insight, and emotional support have always been very valuable to us, and we look forward to his contributions in our pursuit of a championship.”
The Steelers chose Shazier in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft and he played four years in Pittsburgh before the serious injury he suffered on December 4, 2017.

He isn't under contract, but the Steelers are going to pay him for another year and probably most importantly provide him regular medical insurance. As 97BlackAckCL mentions, they could have let him retire and say too bad so sad................ Easy to argue it's the right thing to do but the NFL is a business

Dude, I'm not fucking saying that. I'm going to politely ask you to take your head out of your ass. What they did was great!
What I'm asking is....forget that this event even happen. What would be the option for other players in this situation? How is a player taking care of when his contract is up and a team doesn't do this, is what I'm asking. There has to be care from the team, the NFL because the player can't make a living due to injury. That is the option I'm asking about.

- They stay part of the team in one capacity or another - but this sort of opportunity may not be possible and/or is not extended to everyone and also some perhaps probably would find it too difficult to remain with the team.
- They retire living with the injury and get support from family and friends.
Other than that guessing it is up to the team you play for and the individual circumstances. I just thought as the NFL is a business, it was a classy move for the Steelers to take care of Shazier like they are because they aren't getting any ROI.
