Yummy, your perspective is myopic. Pete Rose was a gambler, no? Gambling IS an addiction.
I don’t prescribe to this idea that being a “professional athlete” means anything about your character. What it means more often than not is that you are an elite physical specimen and nothing more. Mike Tyson is proof of that. Some guys can make it by being professional. Others make it in spite of themselves.
Louder, this isn’t a defense of Manziel, but he was (is?) and addict too. He was a millennial addicting to partying, and his vices extended beyond alcohol and women to supposedly cocaine. He just did a decent job keeping that out of the news, and maybe that has to do with his family wealth. While he acted like a complete idiot, he did go to rehab for real.
To my point to Yummy, his physical ability and luck took him to the NFL, nothing more. He was nearly suspended prior to his Heisman season for presenting a fake ID to a LEO in the bar district and was going to transfer as a result. That suspension just barely didn’t happen. Instead, his Heisman season was done behind an NFL caliber o-line. Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good.

They didn't and instead, tried to get the best of both worlds? Sorry, nope. Get out because you're an idiot.
All of these pro athletes are paid generational amounts of $$$$ to do something to your point they were lucked into because they happen to be physical specimens. So, yeah...to throw it away for an addiction they did not treat or slap themselves awake for? Stupid.
