As much as we love Alex Smith as a great dude and a very decent QB....we're so glad to have not continued the sloppy seconds QB game that KC has been into. I can feel for Redskins fans....they're probably not the happiest, lol
And I don't even know what the heck is the right move for Vikings. You got like 3 potential guys, 2 are injury prone, and 1 is a maaaybe decent QB?.......yikes

On the other end we gave KC arguably the best up and coming CB in the league that was still on his rookie deal. That hurt our team as well. The Skins botched this by not signing Cousins long term after the first franchise tag (or even before). In my opinion the only way they can save face is if they can tag and trade him to recover something.

As a Skins fan its a two sided coin. On one end, you know Cousins and you know what he is capable of. If the team was decimated by injuries this year would we have been better? Who knows. But we have some glaring holes that need to be filled by the draft and free agency. Paying Cousins $29m+/ year would have left those holes for the next 2 to 3 years as we'd be forced to build entirely through the draft. I see Alex Smith and Cousins as very similar QBs with similar skillsets (Cousins has a bigger arm, Smith has better wheels). With that said, we saved $13m+ a year by signing Smith, leaving us the ability to sign other talent around him (big time receiver or RB).

I try to think logically, but then again I wouldn't be a Skins fan if that were the case . I agree with you. The other problem with the tag and trade scenario aside from what you stated is that we have $35mil in cap space, tagging Cousins would be $34.5mil. It could get hairy. With the Eagles and a healthy Giants team in the division, I'm afraid we're going to play 3rd or 4th fiddle in the division for the next couple of years.

Details on the deal. Heavily front loaded into year 1. What Niners fans already know is that our salary cap guy is a wizard. Even with the big first year payout, 49ers will still have roughly the 2nd most cap space in the NFL, now tied with the Colts ($77 million)
Signing bonus: $7 million.
Guaranteed roster bonus: $28M
2018 base salary: $6.2M (gtd)
Workout bonus: $600K
Per-game roster bonus: $800K
Year 1 total: $42.6M
$74.1M injury guarantee already kicked in.
2019 bass salary: $17.2M, $7.5M of which is guaranteed at signing.
2019: Workout bonus: $600K
Per-game roster bonus: $800K
For 2019, will make $18.6M for a 2-year total of $61.2M - $10M more than he would have received if he had been franchised two straight times.
2020 bass salary: $23.8M, $15.7M of which is guaranteed for injury.
If 49ers wanted, could cut him before April 1, 2020 and he would have made $61.2M and been a free agent.
2020 Workout bonus: $600K
Per-game roster bonus: $800K
At end of three seasons, he walks away with $86.4M.
2021: $24.1M base salary
2021 Workout bonus: $600K
Per-game roster bonus: $800K
If he makes it to NFC Championship game or is first- or second-team All Pro, then a $7.5M injury guarantee kicks in.
2022: $24.2M base salary
Workout bonus: $600K
Per-game roster bonus: $800K
Total is $137.5M.

I had my reservations about picking up a 30 year old CB with an Achilles tear but now I'm very happy knowing it's a team friendly deal. Prognosis looks good too. Better fit than the other options - our d coordinator was a former Seattle guy.
We now have two 6'3 corners. Witherspoon looked great last year, can't wait to have a solid secondary again.

Most around here knew Sherman leaving was inevitable. However I'm actually very surprised he signed within the division. But then again he played at Stanford which means he'll probably have something of a local fan base, and being from Compton maybe he wanted to stay close to home.
As far as I'm concerned SF can win every game next year except two. I can't shake the feeling that SF is going to be the LA Rams of the 2018/19 season. NFC West is going to be a rough division.

Niner fans are thinking they are taking the division. I doubt they will, they still need to worry about the Rams. We know Seattle will be dead last though.
Sherman wanted to stay on the West Coast. NOW, if Crabtree was still playing for the Niners, do you think Sherman would have signed with them?

I think part of Sherman's success (or any CB) is also predicated on the pass-rush, right? So, if the 9ers can apply the defensive pressure and gap control like the Seabirds, then yeah...he will be successful. Otherwise, not sure if he'll have the greatest of numbers.

I bet he would have. The Sherman/Crabtree thing seemed to only be around that one game or maybe that season. A lot of time has passed. My money would have been on water under the bridge.

Sherman is the ideal press corner. Naturally that play style has its inherent risks, but he had one of the best FS behind him. The TY Hiltons of the NFL always had his number though.
That whole legion of boom defense focused on the secondary but their entire defense was great. Wagner is one of the best LBs right now and he's great in coverage as well. Pass rush definitely helps but their run defense was excellent too, putting offenses in a bad spot. They pushed Manning's shit in during the best season of his career.
I would actually prefer Sherman at LCB over RCB. Last year's rookie, Witherspoon has been that good.
Rams are obviously gearing up for SB runs the next few years. Then Donald and Goff will be off of their rookie deals.

Time will tell whether he will be back at 100% after rehab. I highly doubt it. Whether or not he loses a step is another story. Crabtree was definitely not the same after his Achilles and he was younger.
I'm very excited to see how he'll mentor Witherspoon. They're of similar build, with Witherspoon being faster but less of a ball hawk.
Nnamdi went to the Eagles "dream team" but stunk it up because he lost a step and wasn't a scheme fit. At least here, Sherman is.
Also found out the turkey leg shenanigans at Levi's on Thanksgiving was set up by NBC. Sherman didn't think it was disrespectful though - to which I highly fucking disagree
I totally respected his game up to that point, then I hated him. But now I just hate NBC
